Freedom cross country runner, Shaina Palmer, took second place in Class AAA and fifth place overall at the Lions Invitational Cross Country Meet last Friday at Moravian Academy.

Freedom coach Bob Thear said, "It was a good start for her. She was only 15 seconds off her personal record, but even with that, she's in a great position."

Palmer finished the race in 20:26.

Palmer said, "I was a little disappointed with my time. I was kind of tired, and I have allergies right now, and it was hot. I could have done better."

Palmer's strategy was to stay with the front of the pack.

"I tried to go out strong but not too fast. I tried to stay pretty consistent. I tried to stay with the frontrunners because you don't want them to get too far ahead," said Palmer.

Also from Freedom, Caterina Atiyeh finished the race in 22:42, followed by Bridget Tarnowski in 22:49. Alexa Deemer's time was 23:34, and Morgan Lukievics finished in 24:01.

Also running for the Patriots were Sarah Callahan with a time of 24:28 and Kelly Kopko with a time of 27:16.

Palmer said, "We were worried at the end of last year because we didn't know who our coaches would be. I think we got pretty lucky."

Bethlehem Catholic's Kassi Yocco came in 14th place overall for the Hawks in 21:06. Olivia Zemanek finished in 21:47, followed by Cecelia Zemanek in 21:51. Margaret Zemanek's time was 26:15, and Megan Tucker's time was 26:16.

Also running for the Hawks were Abby Moninghoff with a time of 28:14 and Anne Fecanin with a time of 29:48.

Host Moravian Academy raced two girls: Emily Smith, who finished in 21:58, placing 31st overall, and Kieran Madden, who finished in 23:39.

Liberty raced four girls: Nicole Nelson, who placed 37th overall in 22:31, Sammie Parks, who finished in 24:39, Emily Cecchini whose time was 24:45, and Emily Ledyard, whose time was 24:55.
