Hellertown: Council eases crosswalk burden
Kevin Lott approached Hellertown Borough Council Sept. 17 requesting permission to install a sidewalk on his property rather than the required raised crosswalk.
"It's very burdensome," Lott told council. "This crosswalk is much more than I bargained for."
Lott said he obtained estimates for the crosswalk, which averaged $32,000. He also said he would have to carry liability insurance, which is costly.
Borough solicitor Michael Corriere said the crosswalk plan had been approved several years ago. Pursuant to the agreement, Silver Creek Country Club was required to install sidewalks on the property. Lott purchased his home from the country club.
Corriere instructed council it was within its power to alter the original agreement Lott entered into by allowing for the installation of a sidewalk.
Councilman Michael McKenna agreed with Lott's request. "I'd rather see a sidewalk than anything else on that property," he said.
"It would be a relief to me," Lott said.
Council unanimously approved Lott's request.
