Maranzana takes 1st
Prior to Federica Maranzana's final in the LVC Tennis Tournament last week, the Freedom junior knew that whether she played Avery McCall from Northampton or Colleen Wylie from Parkland, it would be a good match.
At the time, Maranzana had no idea that McCall had just defeated Wylie in a 7-5 tiebreak.
Maranzana said, "I'm excited because last year I got to the final."
This year, Maranzana won the final, 10-3, and LVC gold at number three singles.
Maranzana began the tournament with an 8-0 victory over Emmaus's Catherine Garrity, followed by an 8-5 victory over Allentown Central Catholic's Jen Hildebrandt.
"I feel like [the matches] were pretty similar. I was focused on trying to get [Hildebrandt] to move around. I think I did it as best as I could," said Maranzana.
Going into the final, Maranzana focused on her backhand and hitting the ball down the line.
Also from Freedom, Flannery Johnston won third place at number one singles after defeating Northampton's Darby McCall, 10-2.
Earlier in the day, Johnston defeated Emmaus's Kelly Nguyen, 8-5.
"I found it a struggle because it was hard to beat her. When my serves were going in, they were helping me a lot," Johnston said.
Johnston then lost to eventual gold medalist Jenna Peng before beating McCall.
"It's a good experience, and I have more years ahead. I have to keep thinking like that," said the Freedom sophomore. "I just need to be painfully consistent and calm myself down."
