SBHS: Holiday display features 19 trees

Wednesday, November 28, 2012 by ANDREW CASS Special to the Bethlehem Press in Local News

The South Bethlehem Historical Society Christmas tree display offers 19 trees this year, with each tree decorated to represent a different ethnic group.

The annual lighting event was Nov. 25 in the Comfort Suites lobby.

This year Ukrainian and Mexican trees have been added, joining the Moravian, Hungarian and Portuguese trees among others.

Entertainment for the lighting was provided by the Broughal MS Chorus, the Russian Orthodox Church Choir and The Four Leaf Clovers. City Council member Robert Donchez and State Representative Steve Samuelson spoke at the lighting.

Baked goods were provided by the members of the historical society, as well as a few local grocery stores, including Ahart's Market, which provided a cake for the ceremony.

"I think we're going to have a large crowd again this year," said President Dana Grubb, who will MC the event. "It should be fun."

The historical society also held its photography contest Nov. 2 at Northampton Community College. In total, 30 photographs were submitted from about a dozen participants. The theme of the exhibit was Greenway people and signs.

This is the first year the contest was held in the fall, which Grubb said contributed to a lower turnout in participants than usual.

"The marketing effort also wasn't there the way it was in past years," Grubb said.

Grubb said Northampton Community College is interested in holding the contest again, and the historical society is eyeing a summer date for next year.
