Becahi girls get win

Bethlehem Catholic's girls basketball team was too hot to handle for Whitehall in the Hawks 48-31 victory over the Zephyrs at the Yasso-Rothrock Tournament on Saturday.

Although the Zephyrs took the early lead, a three-pointer by Becahi freshman, Nia Mims, sparked the Hawks offense toward the end of the first quarter.

Soon after, the Hawks pulled away when Becahi guard, Nicole Lacherza, hit a three of her own, breaking a 12-12 tie at the beginning of the second quarter.

Mims, Lacherza, Bridget Smith, Cecelia Perez, Janelle Robinson, and Kalista Walters combined for 29 points by halftime.

Becahi's defense also kicked in, forcing Whitehall turnovers and drawing fouls.

"We knew Whitehall had a couple good players and [Madison Kelly] was a good shooter, so we tried to take her out of the game. Overall, I think our defense was amazing," said Smith.

Kelly had 13 points for the Zephyrs, but Whitehall faced a scoring drought in the third quarter until the final minutes when Kelly hit back-to-back baskets.

Smith, who had ten points, 13 rebounds, three blocked shots, and three steals, and Kelly were named tournament MVPs for their respective teams.

Smith said, "I was really surprised. No one really stood out. We played as a team."
