Softball: Hawks Brown win fall title

Wednesday, December 12, 2012 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Bethlehem Hawks Brown were crowned 2012 Fastpitch Softball Association Lehigh Valley High School Fall League champions after a 9-3 victory over Whitehall Maroon on Oct. 25 at Pates Park, Allentown.

The Hawks broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and scored additional runs over the next three innings for the championship trophy.

Coach Rich Mazza said, "We were just happy. I don't really go in with the thought of trying to win, but I like to see some kids who don't usually play, and we have a real nice freshman class, so I got to see them. It's a nice program."

Each team played a ten-game regular season: one double-header, one night a week. Playoffs, which began on Oct. 11, were single elimination.

In the semifinals, which were played on Oct. 24, Whitehall Maroon defeated Bethlehem Hawks Gold, 5-3, and Bethlehem Hawks Brown defeated Liberty, 10-1.

The Bethlehem Hawks teams included Megan Beaupre, Bethanne Brandstetter, Emily Brandstetter, Angelys Cotto, Elise Cuttick, Bailee Deshler, Autumn Garrity, Arcadia Hewins, Jen Lopez, Julia Madison, Marissa Merriman, Joelle Morey, Brooke Rau, Kylie Shivok, Kylie Smolock, Courtney Shupp, Maria Talpas, and Wynonna Wo.

Bethlehem Hawks Brown has made it to the semifinal game in all of the four years the league, operated by Jon Adams, has been in existence.
