Anytime you can place half your roster at a wrestling tournament, it's been a good weekend.

Those were the words of Liberty head coach Jody Karam, as his Hurricanes came off a third place finish from the Penn Manor tournament last weekend.

Grimaldi Gonzalez was one of three finalists for the 'Canes, but the only one to come home with a championship, claiming the 126-pound crown following a 6-5 decision over Ronnie Perry of Solanco.

Noah Klingborg (170) and Jake Gunning (220) each took silver for Liberty, as eight Hurricanes came home with medals.

"This is really a great group of guys we have this year," said Karam. "They know when to turn it on and focus and we know when to have some fun.

"They fought hard all weekend and it was a great performance. It's quite an improvement from last year, since I don't even think we finished in the top ten a year ago."

Joe Corzi (106, fifth), John Ritter (113, sixth), Mike Connelly (120, fourth), Ardis Smith (145, seventh) and Malik Lovell (152, fourth) rounded out Liberty's medal contingent.

Liberty takes on Allen tonight in their second Lehigh Valley Conference match of the season. The 'Canes toppled Central Catholic 59-6 last week and will look to do the same against the Canaries tonight.

This will be their final tune-up before hosting the Hurricane Holiday Classic on December 28 and 29, where Gonzalez will be favored again to find himself in the finals.

"This is what we expect from him this year," said Karam of Gonzalez. "He has the potential to do great things."
