'Canes knock off Easton
The Liberty Hurricanes swam to two more victories on Dec. 18, as the boys defeated Easton, 205-99, and the girls also defeated the Red Rovers, 180-132.
Individual event winners for the boys were Sean VanAtta in the 200 IM in 2:13.10, Ryan Spadt in the 50 free in 23.51, Evan Smith in the 100 free in 54.00, Alex Medellin in the 500 free in 5:34.28, and VanAtta in the 100 backstroke in 59.94.
"The 200 IM was a touch-out at the end," said team captain, James Sheplock, regarding VanAtta's close finish.
Liberty's Bryan Rivera won the diving event with 135.95 points.
The Hurricane boys also won two relays.
Spadt, Sheplock, Smith, and Jacob Jones took first place in the 200 free relay in 1:37.73, and Jones, Spadt, VanAtta, and Sheplock placed first in the 400 free relay in 3:41.04.
"We have a very strong freestyle group. [Jacob Jones] is a fast 100 freestyler, so he can get the lead because you don't want to have to come from behind. I've been an anchor since sophomore year. [The pressure] is something you have to get used to, but I like it in the end. The adrenaline really pumps you up," Sheplock said.
The individual event winner for the Hurricane girls was Jocelyn Baker in the 500 free in 5:25.09.
Madison Sauers, Baker, Kayla Drago, and Emma Williams combined to win the 400 free relay for Liberty in 3:56.41.
Looking ahead to the continuation of the 2012-2013 season, Sheplock said, "We're expecting Southern Lehigh and Nazareth to be close, and of course, Freedom at the end of the year."
