Hellertown: Snow thrown in streets a problem

Thursday, January 9, 2014 by MARK RECCEK Special to the Bethlehem Press in Local News

Hellertown Borough Council was informed at its Dec. 16 meeting the recent snowstorm resulted in a number of residents who tossed snow on their property into the street.

Tom Henshaw, borough public works director, told council the problem of improper snow removal is the worst he has seen to date.

Pursuant to borough ordinance, throwing snow into the streets is prohibited, resulting in a citation to the offending party.

According to Henshaw, residents with the larger yards appeared to be the responsible party found improperly disposing of snow.

Councilman Mike McKenna said the borough should make an effort to remind residents of the regulation pertaining to proper snow removal.

Councilman Tom Rieger recommended Borough Manager Kathy Hartranft prepare a press release for distribution to residents informing them of the regulation.

Rieger also recommended the borough put together a call for mass distribution to borough residents warning them of the regulation and citation.

In other business, council approved cost of living increases for four retired borough police officers.
