BB&T, LVCF disperse $1.45M in grants

Lehigh Valley Community Fund and BB&T announced $1.45 million in local investments and grants in a day of roving news conferences June 29.

BB&T is a North Carolina financial services company with interests in community banking, and in cooperation with LVCA donated to more than a dozen valley organizations to support economic development and education.

“It has been a true pleasure working with Scott Fainor and the leadership of the BB&T Economic Growth Fund in making these important investments in the growth of the Lehigh Valley,” said Bernie Story, president and CEO of the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation. “We are delighted to have partnered with BB&T in assessing the many opportunities for support, and we know this effort will have an impact throughout the entire community. The Lehigh Valley Community Foundation is in a strong position to support efforts like this, and BB&T is to be commended for their commitment to the quality of life in the Lehigh Valley.”

BB&T Community Banking Group Executive Scott V. Fainor said, “BB&T has a long history of supporting our local business and academic communities. We are proud to provide community leadership at this level, and we believe BB&T’s investment will play a significant role in the future health and prosperity of the Lehigh Valley.”

Grant beneficiaries include:

• Allentown Economic Development Corporation, in collaboration with the City of Allentown, Lehigh County and Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation:

$250,000 for the redevelopment of Allentown Metal Works site

• Bethlehem Economic Development Corporation, in collaboration with the City of Bethlehem, Northampton County, Lehigh University and Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley:

$250,000 for the creation of a revolving loan fund to remediate blighted properties in Bethlehem

• Lehigh Valley Industrial Park, in collaboration with Northampton County and Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation:

$250,000 for the construction of the Bethlehem Manufacturing Center

•Ben Franklin Technology Partners, in collaboration with Lehigh University’s Baker Institute for Entrepreneurship, Creativity & Innovation:

$100,000 for the expansion of a Lehigh Student, Faculty & Alumni Collaboration Area and the mission of the Baker Institute and its business incubator

• Northampton Community College:

$200,000 for the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship

• Lehigh County, in collaboration with Lehigh Career & Technical Institute (LCTI):

$100,000 for LCTI Workforce Development Scholarships

• City of Easton, in collaboration with Northampton County, Lafayette College, Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation and Greater Easton Development Partnership:

$125,000 for the Da Vinci Science City Architectural & Exhibits Master Plan

$75,000 for Parking and Hotel Studies to enhance tourism in Easton

• Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce Foundation:

$50,000 for Western Hamilton Street Gateway Project

• Cedar Crest College

$10,000 for the Student Employment Center

• DeSales University

$10,000 for the Health Care Program Scholarship Fund

• Lehigh Carbon Community College Foundation

$10,000 for Dual-Enrollment Classes with Allentown School District

• Moravian College

$10,000 for the BB&T Fellows Program

• Muhlenberg College

$10,000 for the Business Accelerator Complex
