Liberty cross country runner Belle Weikert and Freedom cross country runner Lauren Charboneau medaled at the East Penn Conference Cross Country Championships last Tuesday at Bethlehem Municipal Course at Illick’s Mill.

In the girls’ race, Weikert placed third with a time of 19:40 behind Easton’s Lauren Maddison whose time was 19:32, and Allentown Central Catholic’s Emily Deschler whose time was 19:31.

“There were girls with me the whole time which is a cool change,” said Weikert, who is usually far ahead of the pack during the regular season meets. “I think I’ll take it out a little slower [at districts]. I think I had enough left [at the end], but I think I can do better.”

Charboneau, a freshman, placed 10th with a time of 20:04.

“I was really nervous in the beginning, and then I was like, OK, I can do this,” Charboneau said. “I really was just saving my energy for the hills. I was thinking I was going to get maybe 30. I passed a couple Easton girls at the end, but a lot of the coaches, they were [yelling out] 13, 14, and I was like OK, I just need to stay in front of these people. I’m really happy.”

The top 12 places received medals.

Bethlehem runners in the top 50 percent were Grace Haas (L) 16th in 20:34, Lauren Bunke (BC) 21st in 20:46, Greta Stuckey (L) 23rd in 20:59, Rachel Byrne (L) 31st in 21:29, Marcela Banuelos (BC) 34th in 21:33, Mary Sweeney (F) 38th in 21:40, Evelyn Sharkan (L) 49th in 22:04, Shannon Connelly (F) 50th in 22:05, Hope Brown (BC) 51st in 22:08, Madison Drager (L) 53rd in 22:15, Mary Scheidel (BC) 56th in 22:22, and Cailin Connelly (F) 61st in 22:32.

In team results, Parkland’s girls’ team won the meet championship, Liberty placed fourth, Freedom placed eighth, and Becahi was ninth.

Weikert, Charboneau, and Bunke were named EPC girls’ cross country first team all-conference.
