Becahi takes silver
Bethlehem Catholic’s tennis team were awarded silver medals at the District XI Team Tennis Championships last Wednesday at Lehigh University.
The Hawks defeated Notre Dame East Stroudsburg 4-1 in the quarterfinal and Salisbury 3-2 in the semifinal, but lost to Blue Mountain in the final 3-2.
As with the match against Salisbury, most of the pressure fell on Becahi’s three singles player Jenna Sloan.
“There were a few things she was trying to do like keep the ball deep and hard because that’s what [Blue Mountain’s] Anna [Gumaer] was having trouble with, but obviously a third set and a match that means a district championship, it’s always difficult to do,” said Becahi coach George Harmanos.
Sloan lost the first set 3-6, won the second set 6-4, and lost the third set 4-6.
“In the beginning of the third set, there were two games we won and the other two games we had 40-15 leads. If we had converted those opportunities, I think she could have continued through,” Harmanos said. “What’s generally an opportunity, in that kind of pressure situation, it’s always hard to deal with. It’s the first year Jenna’s played singles, she’s learning, she’s going to be a great tennis player.”
In Becahi’s match against Salisbury, Sloan won in three sets.
“You know, we lost pretty much our whole lineup [from last year], we only had two really seasoned players back,” said Harmanos. “The kids got here, they got to the final, that’s marvelous.
Coach Harmanos presented medals to Brenna Magliochetti, Molly Ehrig, Sloan, Sydney Foss, Kaitlyn Hartman, Sophia Salomoni, and Lucia Sasiain.
Magliochetti and Ehrig won their matches against Blue Mountain’s Imani Mika, 6-0, 6-2, and Paige Blankenhorn, 6-0, 6-1, respectively.
