Ehrig, Sloan take district silver
Bethlehem Catholic tennis players Molly Ehrig and Jenna Sloan were silver medalists in the District XI Class 2A Doubles Tennis Championships recently at Winning Touch in Allentown.
Logan Lencheski and Emma Anmolsingh from Notre Dame Green Pond won the doubles final, 6-4, 6-3.
“Overall they were a little bit more aggressive and took more risks,” Ehrig said.
Things seemed to be going the Hawks’ way after the pair took a 3-0 lead in the first set, but the Crusaders took over, winning five straight games.
“Their volleys were really good and Logan’s serve pushed us back a lot,” said Sloan. “I think when Molly was serving and when Logan was returning I should have been baseline. It’s a little bit of both [disappointment and proud of how far we’ve come].”
The Hawks won their way through four matches to get to the final, defeating Bangor, 6-0, 6-0, and Moravian Academy, 6-3, 6-1 on Oct. 16.
The following day, Ehrig and Sloan beat another team from Bangor, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarterfinal and Salisbury, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, in the semifinal.
“We learned more about each other when we were playing so we knew what to do, what not to do, how well we were working together,” said Ehrig. “Especially being challenged, that really helped us become a better team together, and we tried to use that today. I’m disappointed my high school tennis career ends here, but overall, I’m proud.”
Lencheski and Anmolsingh also won their way through four matches to get to the final, defeating a team from Saucon Valley, 6-1, 6-0, another team from Saucon Valley, 6-0, 6-1, Salisbury 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), and Moravian Academy 6-3, 7-5.
Lencheski and Anmolsingh will compete in the PIAA State Class 2A Doubles Tennis Championships on Nov. 3 at Hershey Racquet Club.
