Magliochetti state champ in tennis!
Bethlehem Catholic High School’s number one singles tennis player Brenna Magliochetti was crowned PIAA State Class 2A singles tennis champion this past weekend at Hershey Racquet Club in Hershey, Pa.
“It’s kind of indescribable. It’s been multiple days now, and I still can’t wrap my head around it,” Magliochetti said. “After last season, it’s been on my mind for 12 months, so match point was completely overwhelming.”
Magliochetti defeated Knoch’s Laura Greb in the final, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
“[The last point] was definitely one of the most painful points. It was a really long point and a really nervous point, and I missed it in the net, and then it was her serve,” said Magliochetti. “She missed it, and then she made the second serve, and it was another long point, and she missed a forehand.”
Magliochetti had the opportunity to watch Greb’s semifinal match. In addition, Magliochetti’s personal coach Matt Potts had done extensive research on all the players in the state tournament. Greb, in particular, was a big and aggressive player.
“She went up a level [in the second set], hitting incredible shots, and she wasn’t missing,” Magliochetti said. “I had to step up my game too. My serve all weekend was definitely my best weapon. It gave her a lot of problems.”
In the semifinal, Magliochetti defeated Loyalsock’s Katie Savidge, 6-0, 6-0.
Magliochetti began the state tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Bedford’s Emily Ruhlman, followed by a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s Katherine Marks, 6-4, 6-0.
“I thought she had it well in hand,” said Becahi tennis coach George Harmanos. “She worked really hard and even picked up her game from last year. She had a great season and is certainly deserving.”
