Young takes over Freedom diving team
Freedom Patriot divers will compete under a new head coach this season, Lisa Young, who is leading a roster of eight, as of the preseason.
Young, whose daughter, Madison, was a diver at Freedom, has a long history of gymnastics experience, which lends itself perfectly to the sport of diving. Coach Young is also a Freedom High School Hall of Famer and attended Temple University on a full scholarship for gymnastics.
“It’s a lot to figure out, but the nice thing is that the kids are coming and trying out,” Young said. “I like the challenge, it’s something new in my life, and the kids are very responsive and work hard.”
Returning divers for the Patriots are junior Leigha Evans and sophomore Fallon Tatlow.
“Both competed at districts last year, they’re back and strong, and they’re doing really well,” said Young.
Sarah Gill is a brand-new freshman who has a gymnastics background from Parkettes and is a beginner diver.
“I would like to see Sarah be able to compete at districts. That would be a nice goal for her,” Young said. “I have [other] girls who are brand-new and taking the year to learn to dive.”
On the Patriot boys’ roster is senior Griffin Connolly, who is also a baseball player.
“I think he will be able to get into some of the dual meets,” said Young.
This Saturday, the Patriots will compete in the Cedar Crest Classic at Emmaus before their season opener against Nazareth on Dec. 12.
