Southside welcomes the holidays
A heart-warming celebration of Christmas took place Dec. 1 in the Tranquility Park of South Side Bethlehem. Dozens of people attended the event which included a few hours of holiday songs, warm popcorn, carol singing and the lighting of a Christmas tree.
Broughal MS Band and Chorus echoed the park with their cheerful singing and playing of their instruments. Parents, friends and passerbyers joined along in the holiday cheer as the students played Christmas music such as “Jingle Bells,” “Joy To The World,” and more before Anna Smith from Community Action Development Corporation of Bethlehem welcomed everyone in attendance in both English and Spanish.
Bethlehem Councilwoman Olga Negrón led the lighting ceremony. The bare tree was then lit with colorful lights of red, green and yellow.
“I am a proud resident of the Southside of Bethlehem for the last 21 years,” Negron said. “Some friends and I saw this place as once an abandoned spot for years and it is exciting that this is the fourth year that we are celebrating the tree light ceremony.
“ I want to thank everyone for attending this great event. This is an amazing way to start our Christmas holidays,” she added..
After many posed for pictures by the tree, everyone gathered to carol along Fourth Street to the Bethlehem Area Public Library Southside Branch. Cookies, cocoa, crafts and activities awaited.
