Liberty girls swim team knocks off Easton
Liberty’s girls’ swim team went into the Christmas break with a 99-85 victory over Easton on Dec. 21 at Liberty.
“I know we’re expected to beat Easton, but we really need to get our heads in the game because, as you saw in the medley, they won, so we were like, OK, this isn’t an easy swim. We really need to give it our all,” said Kay Wetmore halfway through the swim meet.
Wetmore went on to win the 200 free in 2:04.97, and Abby Mack won both the 50 free in 26.22, and the 100 free in 56.85.
“I was really tired after the medley but because the boys are right after, I have a little time to refuel so it wasn’t too bad,” Wetmore said.
“Right when I dove in, the 200 is like a sprint, so I knew I had to go out fast. I just went out my hardest, and then I saw I pulled away from a few girls, and then I really just wanted to end so I kept going faster and faster.”
The Hurricanes had a 1-2-3 finish in the 500 free led by Wetmore with a time of 5:31.69, followed by Madison Drager and Theresa Cazarrubias.
Kendra Smith, Greta Stuckey, Natalie Richardson, and Mack teamed up to win the 200 free relay with a time of 1:46.74.
In the last two individual events, Anna Lehr took first place in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.38, and Richardson came in first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.60.
