Violet I. Kovacs, 96, of Bethlehem, died Jan. 23, 2018, at Holy Family Manor. Born in Bethlehem, she was a daughter of the late Antal “Tony” and Irene (Varga) Kovacs.

She was a graduate of St. John Capistrano, Liberty High and Bethlehem Business Schools.

She was the owner and operator of the family grocery store on the corner of Fifth and Hayes Streets, South Bethlehem, until it closed in 1986.

She was a parishioner of St. John Capistrano Catholic Church and, more recently, of Incarnation of Our Lord Parish.

She participated in CYO sports and bowling and, later in life, she was active in the Senior Games. She volunteered for the Red Cross during World War II and later volunteered at Holy Family Manor. She was a member of the Hungarian Catholic Club and was active in senior groups.

She is survived by a sister, Irene Kelleher; and three generations of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Catherine Horvath and Sister Andrea, FDC; and two brothers, Anthony and Kalman Kovacs.
