Hawks favored to win state title
Bethlehem Catholic has their eyes set squarely on a team title this weekend as the PIAA wrestling tournament gets underway Thursday afternoon in Hershey.
The Hawks are on their quest to grab their sixth state championship (four in 2A) and enter the tournament as clear favorites heading into the tourney.
That process begins with their opening match against District One third place finisher Downingtown West in Thursday’s opening round of action.
Friday’s quarterfinals will pit the Hawks against either Delaware Valley (District 2 champ) or Cumberland Valley (District 3 runner-up).
Friday’s semifinal round will likely match up Becahi with District One champion Council Rock South, District 7 runner-up Canon McMillan or District 10 champ Erie Cathedral Prep.
With Nazareth on the bottom of the bracket, it’s possible that we could see another showdown between the two teams in Saturday afternoon’s final.
PA Power Wrestling has the Hawks as the top ranked team in the state with Nazareth coming in third.
Cathedral Prep comes in with the state’s #2 ranking, but a scenario where they truly threat Becahi in the semifinals looks unlikely.
With Nazareth appearing to be the team to beat in the bottom of the bracket, along with District 7 champ Kiski Area, it looks likely that a rematch of last year’s epic state final showdown between the Golden Hawks and Blue Eagles will be on the table.
Thursday’s first round starts at 6 p.m. and Friday will have quarterfinals start at 2 p.m. and semifinals at 8 p.m.
Saturday’s championship round is set for 1 p.m.
