LHS relay awaits word on berth

Wednesday, March 7, 2018 by Katie McDonald kmcdonald@tnonline.com in Sports

Liberty’s girls’ swim team opened up the District XI Class 3A Swimming Championships with a silver medal in the 200 medley relay on Saturday at Emmaus High School.

Anna Lehr, Natalie Richardson, Sabrina Krotzer, and Abby Mack swam to a second-place finish with a time of 1:49.70.

“Anna was top three the entire time, and then we kind of inched our way up,” said Krotzer. “I was pretty excited because I was third, and I didn’t know how it was going to turn out. I dove in and swam my heart out. It’s dependent on you and the freestyler, so we just needed to get second place because first was just a little too far ahead.”

In the next event of the day, Lehr took a jump up from last year’s bronze medal and won a silver medal in the 200 free with a time of 1:56.59.

“It was amazing. I loved it. My time got better, and even if it was by a little bit, I was happy with it,” she said. “I swam the medley right before, so this was new for me, but I’m still happy with it.”

The Hurricane girls will have to wait until Tuesday, past Press deadlines, to find out if the medley relay team will qualify for the state meet.

On Sunday, the second day of districts, Lehr won a fourth place medal in the backstroke with a time of 59.37.

“That was the first time I ever swam back at districts. Yes [I surprised myself]. I wasn’t ready to drop that much time,” said Lehr.

The PIAA State Class 3A Swimming Championships are scheduled for March 14-17 at Bucknell University.

“I’m proud of everybody,” said Liberty coach Reik Foust. “Everyone came in, and they swam best times throughout the whole team, so it was a lot of fun that way. The kids worked hard for it. We didn’t really have any surprises from our team. We kind of mapped it out and everybody was in the ballpark, but I thought the meet itself was fantastic with a lot of the peripheral schools stepping up.”
