Baseball - Pates look to win some titles
Freedom always finds a way to compete with the best in the EPC, so how will the Patriots fare in 2018?
Head coach Nick D’Amico knows he needs to replace some offensive production in the lineup, but is also confident the group coming back this spring will be one that should be able to compete for a District 11 playoff berth following last year’s 16-6 campaign.
“I feel we will be able to compete with the rest of the league and will have to do so with great pitching and defense,” D’Amico said. “We will need to replace some big bats in the lineup from last year but we have guys capable of doing that.”
Returning for the Pates include Sr. OF-P Alec Huertas, Sr. 3B-P Tim Healy, Sr. 2B Jonah Mateo, Sr. 1B-OF-P David Smith, Sr. SS-P Griffin Connelly, Sr. OF-P Andrew Knerr and Sr. OF Echua Caban.
New players into the fold are Jr. C Adam Throne, Jr. INF Dylann Paar, Jr. Sandy Hernandez INF, Jr. 3B Joey Stofanak, Jr. 1B-P Caleb Husser, Jr. 1B Tyler Szaro, Jr. P JaRay Cotto, Jr. OF Derek Bast, Jr. OF-C Spencer LaRiviere, Jr. OF Matthew Schaeffer, Jr. INF Cameron Biery, So. OF-P Conor Howland and So. OF-P-1B Nick Stannard.
D’Amico envisions to have his senior group of Huertas, Healy, Mateo, Smith and Connelly to lead the team this year with goals of competing for championships.
“Winning the league and district titles are the two obvious goals,” D’Amico said. “We also want to improve on last years record. We will need our pitching to keep us in games while playing great defense and getting clutch hitting.”
