Gruber makes it to semis
Five Bethlehem high school tennis players competed in the District XI Singles Tennis Tournament last week at Lehigh University and Saucon Valley High School.
Liberty sophomore Louis Gruber made it to the Class 3A semifinal after defeating Whitehall’s Nick Rohn, 6-2, 6-2, Stroudsburg’s Michael Irlbeck, 6-0, 6-0, and Hurricane teammate David Lynn, 6-4, 6-0.
Gruber fell in the semifinal to eventual district champ Sean Jaegaer of Emmaus, 0-6, 0-6.
Before losing to Gruber, Lynn defeated Parkland’s Sam Zahn, 6-3, 6-1, and Pleasant Valley’s Josh Schaffner, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
Also from Liberty, Gavin Snyder defeated Pocono Mountain East’s Nic Brazzeau, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, but lost to Jaegaer, 0-6, 0-6, in the second round.
Freedom’s Justin Szaro won his first-round match against Allen’s Ngun Thawng, 6-4, 6-2, and lost his second-round match to Parkland’s Alex Son, 4-6, 2-6.
In Class 2A, Bethlehem Catholic’s Matt Falteich lost to Moravian Academy’s Daniel Elmi, 0-6, 0-6. Elmi was crowned the 2A district singles champion after defeating Saucon Valley’s Tej Laliwala, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0.
The District XI Class 2A Team Tennis Tournament begins this week with Becahi facing Saucon Valley in a quarterfinal match.
The District XI Class 3A Team Tennis Tournament will also be played this week with Liberty taking on Whitehall in a quarterfinal match.
