LHS beats WHS in team districts

Thursday, May 3, 2018 by Katie McDonald in Sports

Liberty’s boys’ tennis team won its quarterfinal match against Whitehall, 5-0, in the District XI Team Tennis Tournament on Monday at Liberty.

Louis Gruber won at one singles, 6-0, 6-2, David Lynn won at two singles, 6-0, 6-2, and Gavin Snyder won at three singles, 6-0, 6-0.

At number one doubles, Jacob Wong and Anthony Ronca won their match, 6-2, 6-4.

“Anthony’s serve was on today a lot. He was hitting some incredible serving,” said Wong. “And then, second-to-last point, I hit a cross court forehand where none of the guys were, hit it to the open spot, and got us match point.

“It certainly helped from having a super hot day like Saturday, or the really cold days like we had throughout the entire season. It helps the ball, it helps our playing. We play less tight.”

Wong and Ronca never fell behind in the two-set match.

“I think when we talked before the point ... He would tell me, I’m going to serve out wide, so I’d move over, he’d serve out wide, he’d step right in, I’d put it away. It was exactly what you’d want to do. Keep it cross court and play that conservative, and then for your partner, up at the net to really put that away,” said Ronca.

Marc Burritt and Duke Jin won at two doubles, 6-1, 6-3.

The Hurricanes will take on Nazareth in the semifinal on Tuesday, past Press deadlines.

“If we play like we did today, even a bit better, stay on our feet, watch that ball, envision where we want that ball, I’m sure we can do great,” Ronca said.
