Liberty softball wins doubleheader
Liberty softball’s doubleheader on Saturday yielded a 10-0 victory over Pocono Mountain East and a 5-0 victory over Pottsville at Liberty.
“I think we’re starting to come together at the right time,” said Hurricane coach Sam Carrodo. “We have a huge week this week, Northampton on Monday and Beca on Wednesday, so if we can win those two games, we’ll be in very good position, especially if we can defeat Beca because that will give us a chance to win the division if we get a chance to beat Freedom.”
In Liberty’s game against Pottsville, the Hurricanes went up 4-0 in the third inning.
Alexa Burger singled and stole second, Paige Zigmund walked, and Kat Borda came in as a courtesy runner. Kyla Benner had an RBI base hit, and Apryl Cruz doubled to score two more runs.
“I had two strikes on me and I knew we needed to score. I saw it coming right down the middle and the right field was open so I hit a line drive straight out there. It felt really good after I got up from diving into second, which I don’t usually do,” Cruz said.
Cruz also had a base hit in the fifth inning, and Sammy Taylor had an RBI single and a stolen base.
“I knew we needed to rack up the score and keep going,” said Cruz. “I think after the Freedom game, that loss was a tough loss to take, but after that, I think we have gained some confidence, and I feel like we’re on track.”
Liberty outfielder Sarah Curti had a double in the second inning, and catcher Kira Kuhns had a double in the sixth.
“We’re starting to hit the ball a lot better than we have, our defense is getting a little tighter, our pitching has been really, really good the last few games, and the kids coming off the bench are doing an outstanding job,” Coach Carrodo said.
Zigmund was the winning pitcher.
