LHS, FHS battle for EPC playoff seeds
The East Penn Conference baseball tournament gets underway this weekend and Liberty and Freedom are both vying for playoff berths as we hit the final week of the regular season.
The Hurricanes (13-4, 9-4) and Patriots (12-7, 10-5) both come into the week in position to finish as one of the top eight seeds.
Where they will land will ultimately be decided by this week’s slate of contests, as Liberty had to get through four league games, while Freedom only has two games on the docket.
“We play Dieruff, Stroudsburg, Freedom, and Allen in four straight games this week,” said Liberty head coach Andy Pitsilos. “We needed to win at least two, preferably three or four, of the games to be seeded well and have a home playoff game for the EPC playoffs on Saturday.”
Easton (16-1, 14-1) has already clinched the Steel Division title and is on pace to be the top-seed of the EPC bracket.
The Rovers dispatched Freedom 3-1 on Monday, while Liberty topped Dieruff 13-1.
Both Liberty and Freedom appear to have locked down EPC berths, but Wednesday’s contest between both schools will certainly have an impact on the tournament seeding.
Pitsilos just wants to see his team close out the week in strong fashion, as they’ve won eight of their last nine games.
“I want to see intensity and hustle this last week and get momentum going into the playoffs,” he said.
Bethlehem Catholic (7-10, 5-10) fell off the rails last week, dropping all four contests to dampen their postseason spirits.
The Hawks lost a pair of one-run games to Central Catholic and Pocono Mountain East and then lost an 18-8 contest to Liberty, doubled up by a 5-1 defeat to Freedom.
Becahi topped Allen 6-1 on Monday but has games against Saucon Valley and Easton this week before a closing out the regular season against Pottsville next week.
