LHS, doubles team lose in state tourney
Liberty’s Louis Gruber and David Lynn competed in the first round of the PIAA State Doubles Tennis Tournament but lost to Strath Haven’s Clay Gaieski and Phinneas L’Armand, 2-6, 7-6 (3), 3-6 on May 25 at Hershey Racquet Club.
“The third set, we were up 1-0, and 2-1, and then we lost,” explained Liberty coach Leo Schnalzer. “That match went 2 1/2 hours. It was very competitive and we had opportunities. A lot of the points in the third set went to deuce or ad one way or the other, so we had that opportunity.”
Strath Haven is from District I.
“Both kids served probably harder than anyone we had faced this year, so it took us a little time to adjust on return of serves, but once we did that, the match got a lot tighter. It was a very good match. The opportunities were there,” Schnalzer said.
“I commend David and Louis. They fought. They never gave up. Every point they played tough, and played every point, even at the end, really tough. They knew the match was a great match and could have possibly gone either way.”
Gruber, Lynn, and the rest of the Hurricane tennis team also competed in the first round of the PIAA State Team Tennis Tournament, but lost to Council Rock North, 4-0, on May 15 at Winning Touch in Allentown.
Gruber’s scores were 2-6, 0-6, Lynn’s scores were 2-6, 1-6, and Gavin Snyder did not finish his match, but was trailing 2-6, 1-4 at the time Council Rock had already won.
In doubles, Anthony Ronca and Jacob Wong’s scores were 1-6, 5-7, and Duke Jin and Marc Burritt’s scores were 2-6, 2-6.
