Roche, Luisser make Cup team

Bethlehem Catholic third baseman Addison Roche and Liberty shortstop Julia Luisser will compete in the Carpenter Cup Softball Classic, beginning June 25 at FDR Park in Philadelphia, after being named to the Lehigh Valley team last weekend by head coach Blake Morgan.

Roche and Luisser, both sophomores, will be newcomers to the tournament.

Luisser was inspired to try out by former teammate Kristin Kaleycik who graduated from Liberty in 2017 and currently plays softball at Kutztown University.

“I know how good she is, and I thought with my softball abilities, I could make it,” Luisser said. “The first day, my hitting really wasn’t working because I was striding, so I hit better the second day with no striding.”

Tryouts also included fielding.

“I worked on staying down and not coming up too quickly,” said Luisser.

Roche talked to teammate Jess Indelicato, who played Carpenter Cup softball the last two years.

“Jess said it’s a great experience, and I would learn a lot,” Roche said. “I feel like it might be a little more challenging.”

The Carpenter Cup Softball Classic is also an opportunity for players to showcase their skills in front of college coaches.

“It will inspire me to do my best and not overthink things,” Luisser said. “I’m looking forward to doing really well, working on my skills, and meeting girls outside of the Lehigh Valley.”
