Patriots aim for a memorable 2019 year

Wednesday, March 20, 2019 by Peter Car in Sports

This season might shape up to be a memorable run for Freedom’s volleyball team, as the Patriots return their entire squad from last year’s 15-6 campaign.

Head coach John Yanek, coming into his 28th season, has high expectations for the group, as they hope to be in district and conference title contention.

“We return all our starters,” said Yanek. “Most of our starters and substitutes have been playing varsity for three or four years. Almost all of our returners played club volleyball this past season and gained valuable experience. We are three or four players deep in just about every position. This will allow us to run several different offenses and defenses depending upon the team we face. Players will be vying for starting positions for each match, which will push each one of them to work harder to garner a starting position. We have to concentrate on serve receive and serving consistently.”

Back in the fold for the Pates are: Brad Turocy, Zach Shay, Mike Marakovits, David Barnes, Sabastian Ramirez, Tommy Blair, Xander Franges and Thales Maciel. New players are: Dan Ramirez, Gurdeet Singh, John Hahalis, Brandon Achey and Ryan Crew.

Yanek expects Turocy, Barnes and Shay to be the backbone of the team that hopes to achieve high expectations.

“We have high hopes for a very successful season,” Yanek said. “We want to qualify for the EPC playoffs and reach the district finals and make it to states.”
