Lieb first for Becahi
Senior jumper Liz Lieb carried over her school record in the long jump to clinch a gold medal at the District XI Class 3A Track and Field Championships last week at Whitehall High School.
“So good. So good,” Lieb said. “I was excited that I broke 18, but I was also nervous because I knew that getting it on the second jump, there were girls who were going to jump after me, so I didn’t feel relief until the last 30 seconds.”
Lieb reached 18-02.50 on her second jump.
“Last meet, I got 17-6 and then coming into this week, I felt really motivated and I knew I was in the top three and we were all just separated by a couple inches, so I knew I could do this,” said Lieb. “A lot of it, I think, is just the mindset. I was frustrated after last week so I knew I had to come back and besides that, I feel like I ran faster. Always at leagues and districts, I try to revise my steps, so I’m focusing more on speed than on strength and jumping.”
Lieb also holds the school record in the triple jump and placed fifth at districts with a 36-04.75.
Teammate Maddie Wickel won the bronze medal in discus with a distance of 115-05.00.
Also from Becahi, Josiah Kelly placed fifth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 41.48, and was part of the 4x4 relay with Matt Stianche, Marco Calantoni, and Caden Giordano that placed seventh with a time of 3:30.08.
