Blue Mt. knocks out Becahi Hawks
Bethlehem Catholic’s softball team entered District XI Class 4A playoffs with a 12-2 victory over Allentown Central Catholic last Tuesday at Becahi before falling to Blue Mountain, 4-3, last Friday at Pine Grove.
“They’re a lot like we are,” said Becahi coach Rich Mazza, regarding Blue Mountain. “They’re beating the teams that they should beat, and in teams they’re close with, they’re not winning those.”
Blue Mountain will have played Northwestern Lehigh this Tuesday past Press deadlines.
Becahi’s game against Central ended in the fifth inning after a line drive up the middle by Ashley Judd scored Haley McMenimen who had a triple.
“That was my best hit of the night because it just came off the bat,” Judd said. “Once the pitcher changed, I knew I was going to get a hit.”
Judd also had an RBI in the third inning that went past the shortstop.
“I just wanted to get a hit and I had to wait on my pitch to go, and then right when it was just in, I had to take it that way,” she said.
Becahi right fielder Jaden Spigner had a three run home run in the fourth inning to give the Hawks an 8-0 lead.
“I kind of had a feeling because it felt really good off the bat,” said Spigner. “I knew it was good contact.”
Emma Bond was the winning pitcher.
“We’re playing better and getting hits in bunches which is critical,” said Coach Mazza, “but it’s upsetting because we’re a slow-starting team, and for our young pitcher, that makes it tougher for her.”
The Hawks will lose only two seniors to graduation, Sophia Iovino and Alyssa Jiminez.
“We’ll just have to build on this year and see what happens,” Mazza said.
