FHS, LHS battling

Tuesday, July 2, 2019 by Peter Car in Sports

Liberty and Freedom are both competing in the Lehigh Valley Summer Soccer League at Lehigh University and are battling to stay alive in the playoff picture in Group A.

Freedom, the defending District 11 4A champions, are off to a 2-2 mark, good enough to have them enter the week in fifth place in the 10-team group. Liberty is 1-3 and sitting in seventh place.

The top-five teams in each of the three groups, plus a wild card team with the best record, advance to the 16-team postseason, which begins on July 10.

Freedom has a tough week ahead with contests against Pennridge and Group A leader Hornets-Green (Emmaus), while Liberty has Pen Argyl FC-1 and Saucon Valley Red. With three games for each team left after this week, getting points in the standings are crucial.

Emmaus (4-0) and Pennridge (3-1) come in as the teams to beat in Group A, as the Hornets lead the summer league in points with 12 and have yet given up a goal in any of their contests.

Freedom came into the week sitting with six points, while Liberty had three.
