Wanderers wins title
The expected championship matchup in the NORCO finals between Wanderers and Northampton became a reality last week and as expected, the two best teams in the conference all summer took things to the max of their three-game series.
Wanderers pulled out the championship Monday evening 1-0 to now advance to the Region 2 tournament starting on July 19.
Gabe Rodriguez threw a four-hitter in the victory for the Wanderers, who got the game’s only run in the bottom of the fifth inning off a Eli Lesley’s sacrifice fly.
It was the first NORCO title for the program since 1986 and it was well deserved.
“As I mentioned before our strength is pitching depth and defense,” said long time Wanderers manager Dwight Pulieri. “I believe Northampton and us are almost mirrors of each other. Both of us have quality pitching and both of us can go deep in our pitching staffs. A lot of our players faced off with Northampton in the EPC final so there was a sense of urgency with our guys.”
Dwight Pulieri’s squad took game one of the series with a 1-0 victory, following pitcher Todd Erney’s one-hit performance. In game two, Northampton came back from a 3-0 deficit to muscle five runs in the third and fourth innings to prevail and force a game three.
Monday night’s showdown took things down to the wire again, as Rodriguez had to work his way out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth to help his team escape with the win.
For Northampton, it was the third straight year they fell short in the finals, as the Wanderers will now head to Boyertown for the double-elimination region tournament.
