Teams ready for new football season

The aspirations for a championship season started way back in winter lifting sessions for most area football teams, but all the offseason work now comes out on display this weekend with the official opening of the 2019 season kicking off this Friday night.

For the Bethlehem area teams, it’s the beginning of expected championship aspirations for Freedom and Bethlehem Catholic and hopeful resurgence for Liberty.

The Hurricanes open things at home Friday night at 7 p.m. against Pleasant Valley in a contest that will give John Truby’s inexperienced squad an opportunity to adjust to the bright lights. Liberty walloped PV 42-0 last year and hope they can kick things off in similar fashion.

Freedom and Bethlehem Catholic begin 2019 as defending District 11 6A and 4A champions and are favorites to repeat this fall.

Both teams get a warmup contest this week, as the Patriots travel to East Stroudsburg North Friday night. Freedom dropped 68 points on the Wolves last year, which might be difficult to equate this week. Then again, it may not.

Becahi hosts Dieruff at noon Saturday afternoon at Moravian College, just a block away from BASD Stadium.

The Hawks handled the Dieruff 54-6 last season, as both of these contests will be tuneups for the Pates and Hawks, ahead of next Friday’s (8/30) showdown between both schools in an early-season marquee showdown.
