FHS cheers ready for season

Thursday, August 29, 2019 by Katie McDonald kmcdonald@tnonline.com in Sports

Freedom varsity cheerleaders Jordan Collins and Madison Fey are set to lead the Patriots as captains for the upcoming sports and competition seasons.

Zeanah Bey, Mikayla Fey, Juliana Guzzo, Aracelis Marquez, Leslie Morales, Laycie Parker, Julia Ronca, Isabella Schaffer, Reese Schleppy, Amelia Stocker, Abigail Stocker, Sophia Szvetecz, and Carly Wrecsics make up the rest of the squad.

The Patriots attended an NCA Camp in Honesdale, Pa. recently along with the junior varsity cheerleaders.

“I went to that camp, so I’m happy to go back,” said Freedom coach Breanna Bishamber. “It’s a big camp with a lot of teams, and the staff is amazing. They’re really good people. And I want the girls to have the big camp experience.”

Most of the summer was spent on conditioning practices and housekeeping-type details, such as making sure the girls knew the cheers and the dances.

August 20 was the start of something new for the Pates: competition routines, and Aug. 23 will be Freedom’s first football game.

“We don’t have time to waste around here,” Bishamber laughed, who is in her second full year as head coach.

“I love it,” she said. “Sometimes it feels like two full-time jobs, but it’s good. A lot of freshmen came out this year, and double the amount of girls tried out.”

Also, the varsity squad will be getting new uniforms in a few weeks.

“We’re really excited about those,” said Bishamber.

Assisting Bishamber this year will be junior varsity coach Meredith Campbell and volunteer coach Alexa Fancera.
