Freedom’s girls’ tennis team opened its season last week with a win and a loss, defeating East Stroudsburg North and losing to Stroudsburg.

In the Patriots’ match against the Mountaineers last Thursday at Freedom, Freedom’s Isabella Szmadis and Stroudsburg’s Vasilia Briegel played for almost three hours when Briegel pulled out the win, 7-5, 7-5, at two singles.

Freedom’s Vaideh Chinovawar lost at one singles, 1-6, 1-6, but Dymea Schippers won at three singles, 6-0, 6-1.

“My strategy was taking the ball deep and relying on my serves. Hers was making me run to get the ball. She was wearing me out,” said Schippers. “She was hitting a lot of short balls to my alleys and I covered the ground pretty well.”

Also winning their match for the Patriots were the two doubles team of Olivia Taylor and Keri Sauland who defeated Katie Hosko and Emma Schomberg, 6-0, 6-1.

Isabella Barberis and Kristen Anderson won their first set at one doubles for the Patriots, 6-4, before dropping the next two to Ivana Karataseva and Jelana Nortey, 3-6, 4-6.

Another three-set match was played at three doubles where Stroudsburg’s Sydney Runkel and Olivia Waszkielwicz defeated Anna Isbell and Ellie Barndt, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

At four doubles, Stroudsburg’s Abby Puskar and Jaina Nortey defeated Eesha Gundor and Annika Katchir, 7-6 (4), 6-1.

The Patriots will be on the road this week, taking on Allentown Central Catholic on Wednesday and Parkland on Friday.
