Liberty number one singles player Veronica Lynn was a third place medalist at the District XI Class 3A Singles Tennis Championships, played last week at Parkland High School.

“I wanted to make it to finals, but overall, I felt good that I made it that far,” Lynn said. “[Coach Chris Conrad] said I did a good job, and it was a good result, being a freshman and making it that far.”

Lynn defeated Pottsville’s Ayva Strauss in the first round, 6-1, 6-2, Freedom’s Isabella Szmodis in the second round, 6-4, 6-3, and Pocono Mountain East’s Sarah Naugton in the quarterfinal, 6-2, 7-5, before losing to Stroudsburg’s Paraskevi Briegel, 4-6, 5-7, in the semifinal.

Briegel became district singles champion after winning the finals match against Parkland’s Joanna Wu, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 7-5, on Thursday at Lehigh University.

“Paras was really consistent, and getting everything back, and pushing me backward,” said Lynn regarding the semifinal. “My coach told me to move her for short balls and take the ball on the rise. I kind of kept her running around.”

Lynn said her quarterfinal match could have gone either way.

“[Sarah’s] very good. She and I went to a tiebreaker during the regular season,” Lynn said.

Lynn lost that match but won in districts.

“It felt really great- a redemption, in a way,” she said.

Naughton was plagued by unforced errors in the first set, and Lynn was being aggressive.

“I kind of got careless in the second set, and she started being consistent, so my coach said, ‘Hey, let’s do what we normally do,’” said Lynn.

Lynn was able to get more balls back to close out the set.

In Class 2A, three players from Bethlehem Catholic competed in districts.

Cara Magliochetti and Taylor Adams made it to quarterfinals, and Patty Superka competed in the first round but lost to Megan Niechwiadowicz, 1-6, 1-6.

Magliochetti defeated Salisbury’s Paige Gibbons in the first round, 6-3, 7-5, Blue Mountain’s Lily Wright in the second round, 6-1, 6-0, and lost to Moravian Academy’s Miranda Gibson in the quarterfinal, 2-6, 1-6.

Adams defeated Jim Thorpe’s Christy McLean in the first round, 6-2, 6-1, Central’s Niechwiadowicz in the second round, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, and lost to Moravian Academy’s Isabella Bartolacci in the quarterfinal, 1-6, 1-6.

Bartolacci was district champ after defeating Saucon Valley’s Julia Hernandez, 6-1, 6-1, in the final on Thursday at Lehigh.
