Dawson-Amoah named tourney MVP
Senior Kweku Dawson-Amoah (Bethlehem Catholic) was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player leading the DeSales University men’s basketball team past Alvernia University, 75-72, to take home the Quality Inn Tournament title at Oneonta on Saturday afternoon.
A back-and-forth first-half saw Alvernia finish the half on a short 8-5 spurt to take a 37-32 lead into the halftime locker room.
DeSales quickly erased the halftime deficit using a 10-2 run to take a one-point lead early in the second half.
The game went back-and-forth over the next several minutes as the Golden Wolves clung to a one-point (55-54) advantage with 7:28 left to play.
Junior Matt Kachelries (Emmaus) hit a 3 on DSU’s next possession sparking a 13-2 run giving the Bulldogs a commanding 67-57 lead with 4:46 left on a three from senior Alex House.
It was still a 10-point game after a layup from Dawson-Amoah with 31 seconds left before AU hit consecutive layups around a Bulldog turnover and a 3 after DSU missed two FT’s to pull within three points with seven seconds left.
Dawson-Amoah was fouled with 6.2 seconds left but missed both freebies but the Golden Wolves last second attempt saw a pass tipped out of bounds with one tenth of a second left and DSU ran out the clock to survive with the win.
Senior guard C.J. Barnes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Holy Spirit HS) scored a game-high 23 points and was one of four players in double figures to lead the Moravian College men’s basketball team to a 79-71 nonconference win in Johnston Hall Monday evening as the Greyhounds earned their first victory under the direction of first-year Head Coach Shawn Postiglione.
Junior guard Nick King (Freedom HS) had six points dished out three assists.
