Hawks to host basketball tournament
Bethlehem Catholic’s boys’ basketball program has partnered with the Lehigh County Special Olympics to host a tournament at Bethlehem Catholic on Dec. 20 and 21.
The tournament will feature three other Catholic schools from Baltimore and Washington, D.C., as the likes of John Carroll, Bishop Ireton and St. John’s Catholic Prep make the trek to the Lehigh Valley.
For Hawks head coach Scott McClary, the event is one that he’s always wanted to organize, since his time working with the Lehigh County Special Olympics.
“I have been working with Lehigh County Special Olympics for the past 11 years and anytime that I have been able to partner our athletes with them, I do it,” said McClary. “I also wanted to connect with my relationships down in the DMV (District, Maryland and Virginia) area of hoops and bring some great teams north here to the Lehigh Valley.”
The Hawks open the season on Dec. 6 at Notre Dame’s Jeff Dailey Memorial Tournament. It will be the first of three tournaments the team will be apart of this season, with the other tournament coming after Christmas in the Robert H. Griffith Holiday Basketball Classic on Dec. 27 and 28.
With three tournaments on the schedule, the Hawks have a packed calendar but wanted to make sure they could give back to the community by hosting the event just before Christmas.
“We are still going away after Christmas, back to the York Tournament that we have played in the past several years,” McClary said. “We will be doing several cool events with the Special Olympians during the two days of our tournament, but those details are still being finalized.”
