John M. Sunday, Elite co-owner; funeral director

John M. Sunday, 67, of Whitehall, died suddenly March 11, 2020, at Penn State Health - Saint Joseph, Bern Township. Born in Pottsville, he was a son of the late John G. and Helen M. (Michaelcavage) Sunday.

He was a 1970 graduate of Minersville Area HS; a graduate of Lehigh-Carbon Community College, Schnecksville; and a graduate of the American Academy McAllister Institute of Mortuary Science, New York, New York.

He was an apprentice and then a funeral director with the Long Funeral Home, Bethlehem; and was a trade embalmer for various funeral homes throughout the Lehigh Valley. He was the founder and co-owner of Elite Limousine, Allentown; and owned and operated H. W. Kocher Well Drilling Inc., Nazareth.

He was a former member and past president of the church council of Saint Stephen’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bethlehem.

He was a member of Eastern Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association; Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association; and the Tall Cedars Golf Association, Bethlehem. He was currently serving on his 50th year class reunion committee. He was a former member of Bethlehem Lodge, 283, F.&A.M., Bethlehem. He was a past president of the former Bethlehem Area Jaycees.

He is survived by a brother, Randy S. Sunday of Minersville; a stepson, Peter David Burkhart Jr. of Whitehall; a stepdaughter, Veronica A. Mack of Catasauqua; a niece, Amanda J. Sunday of North Manheim Township; a nephew, Randall J. Sunday of Minersville; friends; and colleagues.
