Lehigh County: Deputy Sheriffs Association contract to be renegotiated

The Lehigh County Commissioners do not want the county to collect union dues for the Deputy Sheriffs Association.

In a 7-2 vote at the July 10 board meeting, commissioners directed the county administration to renegotiate the part of the new collective bargaining agreement that requires the county to collect the union dues.

Board rejects Crossings TIF plan

The Lehigh County Commissioners voted against a tax increment financing plan for the proposed Hamilton Crossings shopping center at its June 26 meeting.

In a 6-3 vote, Commissioners Michael Schware, Scott Ott, Vic Mazziotti, Brad Osborne, Lisa Scheller and Daniel McCarthy voted against the TIF. Commissioners Percy Dougherty, David Jones and Thomas Creighton voted in favor of the TIF.

Lehigh County: Croslis appointed county executive

Matthew Croslis was appointed Lehigh County Executive by the Lehigh County Board of Commissioners at its June 12 meeting.

Croslis, an attorney, will serve out the remainder of Don Cunningham's term, which expires at the end of this year. Cunningham was initially replaced by Bill Hansell, who stepped down in May due to failing health. Hansell died June 4 after a battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Board President Lisa Scheller held a moment of silence for Hansell before the vote.

LEHIGH COUNTY: County executive search under way

For the second time in as many years, the search is on for a new Lehigh County Executive.

William Hansel resigned May 18 due to failing health and the county commissioners have until July 2 to fill the vacancy.

"First and foremost, our thoughts and hopes and prayers go out to Bill Hansel and his family," County Chairwoman Lisa Scheller said.

The Lehigh County Commissioners deferred a vote on whether to approve a tax increment financing plan for the proposed Hamilton Crossings shopping center at its May 22 meeting.

Director of Community and Economic Development Cindy Feinberg recommended the deferral because the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission has not had a chance to look at the traffic impact of the proposed project, which was a concern to some commissioners.

Search underway for Lehigh County exec

For the second time in as many years, the search is on for a new Lehigh County executive.

William Hansel resigned May 17 due to failing health and county commissioners have until July 2 to fill the vacancy.

"First and foremost, our thoughts and hopes and prayers go out to Bill Hansel and his family," Commissioners' Chairwoman Lisa Scheller said.

Scheller said applications for the position needed to be returned by May 28, 10 days after the vacancy.

The deadline for recommendation from the intergovernmental and appointments committee is June 17.

LEHIGH COUNTY COMMISSIONERS: Fourth time's the charm for the Green Future Fund

The Lehigh County Commissioners finally approved the Green Future Fund at their Jan. 23 meeting, after tabling it on three previous occasions.

The full $1.06 million will be funded and paid for by money received through impact drilling fees for natural gas. The bill will fund the Martin Luther King Trail in Allentown, the Saucon Rail Trail in Upper Saucon Township, Camp Olympic renovations in Lower Macungie Township, the Lindberg Park connection trail in Salisbury Township, community park improvements in Emmaus and restoration projects on Sand Island in Bethlehem.
