Hawks top NHS HA

Bethlehem Catholic singles players, Kevin Hamilton and Stephen Rossi, clinched their matches at number one and number two singles, respectively, and later teamed up at number one doubles to lead the Hawks to a 5-2 victory over Nazareth last week.

Hamilton defeated Andrew Wahlgren, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.

"I got off to a rocky start and lost the first set, but Mr. Harmanos just reiterated to play my game and get good ground strokes. I made the points longer and kept him moving back and forth," said Hamilton.

Last week was a week of feast or famine for the Liberty Hurricanes, winning two high-scoring games and losing one.

A 15-10 victory over Bangor preceeded a 10-0 victory over Whitehall before the Hurricanes fell to Parkland, 12-0.

Making her pitching debut at the varsity level last Saturday against Bangor was Lauren Epsaro, and three days later, the Liberty junior pitched a no-hitter against the Zephyrs that ended after six innings.

LHS downs Dieruff

The Liberty Hurricanes are heading into rivalry week with a recent 6-1 victory over the Dieruff Huskies.

At number one singles, Liberty's Chris Kapcos defeated Ryan Kopishke, 6-1, 6-1, and at number two singles, Brandon Cunningham defeated Aaron Patrick, 6-2, 6-4 for the Hurricanes.

Liberty's Milind Jagota, who had been playing doubles until last week, defeated Eric Perez at number three singles, 6-0, 6-4.

Blanchard sets mark in 100

Bethlehem Catholic sprinter, Mara Blanchard, broke the school record in the 100 meter in the Hawks 108-41 victory over Freedom last week.

Blanchard and teammates, Katie Altpeter and Jade Kubitsky, made it a one-two-three finish in the 100 meter, with a time of 12.3 for Blanchard.

"My coach told me, and Katie high fived me, so I was pretty happy about that," said Blanchard.

Altpeter won the 200 meter in 26.6, and Kubitsky won the 400 meter in 1:01.7.

In distance events, Becahi's Meghan Roszyk won the 800 in 2:35, and Freedom's Alexa Deemer placed second.

Another close win for Freedom tennis team

The Freedom Patriots survived another close call, defeating Nazareth, 4-3, last Tuesday.

Andrew Sinai, Bill Leeson, and Ross Sonnenblick won their matches at singles for the Patriots, leaving the team match in the hands of the number one doubles team of Sinai and Sonnenblick.

Sinai, a sophomore, and Sonnenblick, a freshman, defeated Nazareth's Mike Fishler and Andrew Wahlgren, 6-2, 6-1.

Becahi track falls to Emmaus

Bethlehem Catholic's boys track and field team just missed a victory over Emmaus, losing 76-74 to the Hornets last week.

First place winners for the Hawks were Donovan West in the 100 meter (11.1) and the 200 meter (23.6), Austin Biege in the 400 meter (54.0), and John Donchez in the 1600 meter (4:52.8).

Donchez said, "We really wanted to win. I think we're more talented as a team, but they pushed us."

Tyler Horton broke the school record in the 300 intermediate hurdles (39.2) and tied his own school record in the 110 high hurdles (14.6).

FHS boys get first W

Freedom's boys track and field team scored its first victory over Central Catholic, 79-70, last week.

Distance runners for the Patriots had 1-2-3 finishes in all events against the Vikings.

Jason Lopez was first in the 800 meter (2:21), followed by Robbie Bogardo and Tommy Salerno, Chris Kelly was first in the 1600 meter (4:47), followed by Doo Park and William Alpaugh, and Kelly also took first place in the 3200 meter (10:37), followed by Park and Alpaugh.

Distance coach Bob Thear said, "I'd like to think we were a big part of it [the win]."

Pates rally to top LHS

Becca Herman's first-ever home run at the varsity level lifted Freedom over Liberty last week, 6-2.

"It felt really good. It felt good to get them early in the season," said Herman.

The Freedom shortstop's homer was hit between leftfield and center. Earlier in the game, Herman hit a double in the same spot.

Freedom leftfielder, Dana Pollock, who had been misidentified as Dana Morgan in the Bethlehem Press last month, was 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Becahi defeats K-Kids

Bethlehem Catholic handed Northampton its first tennis loss in the Lehigh Valley Conference, defeating the Konkrete Kids, 5-2, last Tuesday.

For the Hawks, it was the doubles teams that pulled through for the victory.

Becahi's Kevin Hamilton and Stephen Rossi avenged their losses at number one singles and number two singles, respectively, to win at number one doubles, 6-2, 6-3, against Northampton's Geoff Rybitski and Josh Schoenberger.

At number two doubles, Paolo Turco and Marcin Boraganli defeated Andrew Burger and Tyler Nicholas, 7-6, 6-3.
