Marty Nothstein, Dan Hartzell sworn in as new commissioners

Lehigh County swore in two new commissioners at the board’s Jan. 4 reorganization meeting.

Taking the oath of office were newcomer commissioners, Republican Marty Nothstein of Lowhill Township and Democrat Dan Hartzell of South Whitehall Township.

Also sworn in during the reorganization meeting were re-elected commissioners, Republicans Amanda Holt of Upper Macungie Township and Brad Osborne of South Whitehall Township.

Former Commissioner Vic Mazziotti was not re-elected by the voters to serve another term.

Saucon Valley: Students to receive new iPads

Beginning next academic year, seventh-through-12th grade students in the Saucon Valley School District will be provided a new iPad.

The school board at its June 9 meeting expanded the one-to-one technology program by approving by a vote of 6-3 a iPad three-year lease that will provide 1,200 new iPads.

Voting against the lease were board members Edward Inghrim, Bryan Eichfeld and Susan Baxter.

The annual cost amounts to $151,076.

The older iPads currently in use will be distributed to earlier grades.

LV Christian HS - 'Hold on to what was taught'

It was a time of gratitude and reflection Friday evening as 30 members of the Lehigh Valley Christian HS Class of 2015 officially crossed over from student to graduate.

The commencement exercise, held at Cedar Crest Bible Fellowship Church, Allentown, began with the soft tolling of the bell and the new graduates walking in twos down the aisle of the church and ultimately taking their seats in the front of the sanctuary.

Valedictorian Adeline Guthrie of Emmaus said it was a privilege spending the past four years with her classmates.

LEHIGH COUNTY: Commissioners votes to support 'My Brother's Keeper'

The Lehigh County Board of Commissioners have decided to support a national campaign titled "My Brother's Keeper."

At the May 28 meeting, the board unanimously agreed to become part of the national initiative.

The campaign strives to help young men of color succeed in life.

The approved resolution directs the board to create a plan of action at the local level to ensure the success of area youth.

Commissioner David Jones Sr. spoke in favor of the board supporting the campaign.

Saucon Valley: School board discusses strip search policy

The Saucon Valley School Board is currently looking at a policy that may expose students to strip searches in the future.

At the May 26 meeting, the board discussed including the search of a student's body in the current strip search policy.

The board approved the first reading of the policy unanimously.

Board President Michael Karabin stressed the board solicitor must evaluate the legality of the policy before the board ultimately approves a final reading.

"The board needs to be clarified on this," Susan Baxter said. "We don't want this to be an extreme policy."

LEHIGH COUNTY: Board appointments made

The Lehigh County Board of Commissioners have appointed two new individuals to boards.

At the April 22 meeting, the board appointed Lower Macungie resident Deana Zosky to the Lehigh County Authority and John Crampsie, of North Whitehall Township, to the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority.

In the first round of voting for Zosky, only Commissioner David Jones Jr. cast a vote of support.

Commissioners Geoff Brace, Thomas Creighton and Amanda Holt cast their votes for Lower Macungie resident Jeremy Melber.

Nine candidates will be going tooth to nail for four open seats on the Lehigh County Board of Commissioners in the May 19 primary election.

The county board of commissioners Democratic race is uncontested. The candidates running for the four open seats are Hillary Smith, of Lower Macungie Township; Bob Martin, of Upper Macungie Township; Dan Hartzell, of South Whitehall Township and Joanne Jackson, of Upper Saucon Township.

Saucon Valley: Board to explore upgrades to facilities

The Saucon Valley School District has formed a committee that will look at recommendations for facilities upgrades.

At last month's meeting, the school board decided to set up an ad hoc committee. The committee will consider such as upgrades as the high school TV studio, expanding the special education rooms in the high school, investing in the district's iPad program and the purchase of a new truck to transport high school band members' instruments.

The committee will consist of board members Jack Dowling, Susan Baxter, Sandra Miller and Bryan Eichfeld.
