Kunkletown man honored for volunteerism

He has volunteered for more than 40 years, and gives selflessly to all causes he holds dear.

It should come as no surprise, then, that Nick Hawkey recently received the Distinguished Citizen Award.

Hawkey, a retired corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, recently received the distinction from the Bethlehem Detachment Marine Corps League during the 43rd Annual Mess Night.

“I was totally honored,” Hawkey said. “I was thrilled with the fact that I knew a lot of the people that had won it over the years.”

Suspect is in custody; man slain, wife in serious condition after shooting

A Bushkill Township man suspected of a double shooting in Lehigh Township Wednesday night is in custody.

According to a source at the scene and scanner reports, John Hann, 61, of Cherry Court, was found by officers on Oakland Road in Bethlehem around 8 a.m.

One of his victims had allegedly identified him to police, and they had watched his home overnight.

Bethlehem, Bethlehem Township and state police were at the scene.

When found, Hann allegedly had his sister, a woman with special needs, with him while he had a handgun.

Education is key to stopping drug epidemic

Education is pivotal in the continued attempts to address the heroin epidemic.

“One of our biggest problems is heroin,” John Sienkiewicz, president of Safer Streets for Tamaqua’s Little Feet, said at a recent STEP-Up Tamaqua meeting. “What they’re doing now is a diabetic needle.”

Sienkiewicz said the diabetic needles are sold at Walmart by the box of 100.

Safer Streets for Tamaqua’s Little Feet purchased a mock drug board for educational purposes by through donations and fundraisers.
