'Oz' not so 'Great,' 'Powerful'

Tuesday, March 19, 2013 by PAUL WILLISTEIN in Focus

At one point in "Oz The Great and Powerful," Oz (James Franco) says to China Doll, a Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) character voiced by Joey King, "One rule in show biz: Never work with kids or animals," adding, "I already have this ... ," as he gestures to another CGI character, Finley, a monkey in a bellhop suit voiced by Zach Braff.

To that show-business adage, it could be added, "Never work with CGI characters."

At least in "Oz the Great and Powerful," for James Franco...

Pennsylvania Youth Theatre's production of Patricia Gray's dramatization of J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" has what any child loves: dwarves with swords going someplace scary to do something dangerous.

The play, with alternating casts of children and directed by Mary Wright, continues through March 24 at the Charles A. Brown Ice House, Sand Island, Bethlehem. For the March 15 performance that was reviewed, the "Back Again Cast" was on the quest through Middle Earth.

Sleep problems not normal part of aging

Tuesday, March 19, 2013 by FRED CICETTI Special to The Press in Focus

Q. I have found that I don't sleep as well as I used to when I was younger. How common is this?

Seniors need about the same amount of sleep as younger adults: seven to nine hours a night.

Unfortunately, many older adults don't get the sleep they need, because they often have more...

Hoffman's 'Quartet' plays well

Tuesday, March 12, 2013 by PAUL WILLISTEIN in Focus

"Quartet" is a thoughtful, entertaining and fun film that hits all the grace notes.

The film is directed by Dustin Hoffman, who will be 76 on Aug. 8, in his feature film directorial debut.

One question: Why did he wait so long?

Well, Hoffman started directing "Straight Time" in 1978, but Ulu Grobard took it over.

The setting for "Quartet" is Beecham House, a home for retired musicians in England, for which the success of the annual gala concert to celebrate...

Cold truth for grandparents' babysitting

Tuesday, March 12, 2013 by FRED CICETTI Special to The Press in Focus

Q. I'm a baby-sitting grandparent. I think I'm getting more colds because of it. Am I right or is this my imagination?

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases reports that schoolchildren get as many as 12 colds a year. Put those children near their grandparents and it doesn't take a scientist to know that those colds are going to spread.

My personal physician, who is also a grandfather, says that one of the problems is that these walking petri dishes come home...
