Hawks crown 3 regional champs

Thursday, March 5, 2020 by PETER CAR in Sports

Cole Handlovic was determined to not have the same feeling two weeks in a row. After losing to Northampton’s Jagger Condomitti in the District 11 finals, the duo met again in last week’s Northeast Regional championship and Handlovic got his revenge.

The Bethlehem Catholic senior scored an escape and takedown in the final 21 seconds of the third period to secure an 8-4 win over his K-Kid counterpart.

His triumph was one of three gold medals by the Hawks on the evening, as Becahi...

Bethlehem Catholic’s girls’ basketball team won its fourth consecutive District XI Class 4A title after defeating Jim Thorpe, 48-31, on Saturday at Easton Area Middle School.

“Anytime you can do anything four years says a lot about the players, the coaches, the parents,” said Becahi coach Jose Medina. “It was a great celebration for our kids and the program.”

The Hawks took immediate control of the game with a 15-4 lead over Jim Thorpe by the end of the first quarter, but both...

Liberty senior Samantha Taylor became a district champion on Saturday after winning the 100 backstroke at the District XI Class 3A Girls Swimming Championships at Parkland High School.

“Immediately after I finished, I turned and looked at the board, and then I immediately turned and looked at my coaches because this is something I’ve worked for the whole season, so they were the first people I wanted to see when I won,” Taylor said.

Taylor, whose time was 57.97, clinched the...

Jewel Levy’s three pointer plus Kailey Turpening’s free throws to start the fourth quarter gave Freedom its first bit of breathing room in the Patriots’ 48-42 victory over Pocono Mountain West in the District XI Class 6A girls’ basketball semifinal last Tuesday at Catasauqua High School.

“I just needed to knock down that shot,” Levy said. “Someone was driving down the lane and they kicked it out and I knew that was our shot.”

Even though the Panthers had hoped to control...

BC falls to Central

Thursday, March 5, 2020 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Nothing softens the blow in the loss of a district basketball final. Not even a berth in states, and not even having overcome an insurmountable deficit in a semifinal days earlier.

This was the feeling of Bethlehem Catholic boys’ basketball coach Scott McClary after the Hawks fell to Allentown Central Catholic, 52-48, in the District XI Class 4A championship game last Friday at Easton Area Middle School.

“Our guys wanted to win, they competed to win, we respect Central, they’re...

Thursday, March 5, 2020 by PETER CAR in Sports

Luis Vargas is the only Freedom wrestler heading out to Hershey this week for the PIAA wrestling championships, but it won’t take away from his goal of coming home with hardware from the state’s grandest stage.

Vargas, a senior 120-pounder, took home a third place finish at the Northeast Regional 3A tournament last weekend at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium, following a 5-2 decision over Cadden Cucek of Wyoming Valley West.

It marks the first time Vargas has qualified for Hershey...

Neither Freedom nor Nazareth’s girls’ basketball teams wanted a district championship more than the other, but after two overtimes, the Blue Eagles prevailed, 46-38, to win the District XI Class 6A final last Friday at Easton Area Middle School.

“It’s disappointing, more so in regards to having an opportunity to win,” said Freedom coach Dean Reiman. “We needed to make an aggressive play and we didn’t, so hats off to them. It was a great high school, district championship game.”

Liberty’s Gilhool claims silver medal

Thursday, March 5, 2020 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Liberty’s boys’ swim team earned one relay and three individual medals at the District XI Class 3A Swimming Championships on Friday and Saturday at Parkland High School.

Hurricane sophomore Patrick Gilhool took silver in the 100 butterfly.

“It was a really good race between us three (Gilhool, Emmaus’s Gio Germano, and Nazareth’s Gabe Laslo), and even on the first 50, we all went into the wall together. Those two guys really pushed me to swim faster and so hopefully I get a bid...

LHS sends two to Hershey

Thursday, March 5, 2020 by PETER CAR in Sports

Javien DeLeon isn’t one to say much, but he has let his wrestling speak for itself over the past two weeks.

The Liberty sophomore is one of two Hurricanes that advanced to the PIAA championships this week at Hershey’s Giant Center, as senior Jason Rezac will also be on his way to Hershey after both wrestlers finished in fourth place at the Northeast Regional 3A tournament last weekend at Memorial Gymnasium.

DeLeon (113) lost to Nazareth’s Andreo Ferraina 4-3 in the consolation...

Becahi advances 11 to Northeast Regionals

Friday, February 28, 2020 by PETER CAR in Sports

It was one of Evan Gleason’s finest moments of his wrestling career and a night he won’t forget. Gleason stole the show at last week’s District 11 3A tournament when he pinned Nazareth’s Dashawn Farber in 2:33 to mark one of the biggest surprises of the night.

His championship medal was one of three that the Golden Hawks collected on the night, as Tyler Kasak (106) and Kenny Herrmann (132) brought home titles as well, en route to Becahi taking home a second-place finish with 243.5...
