Liberty falls in EPC finals; looks to refocus for districts

Wednesday, May 22, 2019 by PETER CAR in Sports

Liberty went through the entire East Penn Conference regular season without a hitch, winning all 16 of their league games. Then in last week’s EPC title game, they found out that none of that really mattered.

Northampton was able to topple the Hurricanes 3-1 for the EPC championship, giving the K-Kids the number-one seed in this week’s District 11 6A tournament.

It was a bitter pill for Liberty (20-3) to swallow not being able to finish the season with the league crown, as they...

Winning vs. development

Wednesday, May 22, 2019 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

The IronPigs limped out of town a week ago having had the last game on their six-game homestand rained out, which may have been a good thing since they lost the first five games, coming on the heels of a loss in Buffalo to end their last road trip.

They went down to Durham and lost two more before a win over the Bulls and then won the middle game of a three-game series in Charlotte over the weekend. If you’re doing the math, that’s 10 losses in their last 12 games.

Whitehall has been Goliath this year on the volleyball court, but Freedom tried their best David act when things came to a head Tuesday night in the semifinal round of the District 11 3A tournament.

The Pates (19-4) and Zephyrs (21-0) were set for a rematch of the EPC championship, where Whitehall won in a three-game sweep. The results of last night’s contest were past Press deadlines, but head coach John Yanek felt his team had a fighting chance, despite being swept by the Zephs...

Easton pulls away to beat Liberty in district softball playoffs

Wednesday, May 22, 2019 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Liberty’s first round game against Easton in the District XI Class 6A softball playoffs started out in the perfect way for the Hurricanes with a leadoff home run by Alexa Burger, a double by Alanyse Solomon, three more solid hits, and a run scored on Monday at Easton.

“In the first inning, we hit five balls hard, all in fair territory, which is a good thing, so we figured that would continue the rest of the game but it didn’t,” said Liberty coach Sam Carrodo.

Not only did it...

Hurricanes advance

Thursday, May 16, 2019 by STEVE ANDRES AND SCOTT PAGEL in Sports

A great catch by Whitehall’s Ben Hudak in the third inning would have been a perfect way for the eighth-seeded Zephs to talk about an upset victory in the EPC playoffs over top-seed Liberty on Saturday.

When first baseman Hudak drifted into foul ground to go after a pop up, the bases were loaded in the bottom of the third of a scoreless game. Hudak kept tracking the ball as it started to reach the fence where spectators had gathered to watch the game. Hudak stuck his glove over the...
