FHS hockey team looks to stay over .500

Wednesday, February 6, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Freedom head hockey coach Mike Mould recently was pealed that his team reached the goal of a .500 season. However, he also envisioned his senior-laden team could have done more.

With two weeks left in the regular season, Freedom had an overall 5-4-5 record in the Varsity Pure Division of the Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey League (LVSHL). The Patriots will begin their final stretch of the season with a game against Non-Pure divisional teams Easton and Phillipsburg next week.

Time for hardware

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

This is the time of year that gears shift in wrestling across the state and for Bethlehem Catholic's program, that means it's time to get some hardware.

The Golden Hawks have a chance to wrap up an undefeated regular season when they take on Freedom tonight in both teams Lehigh Valley Conference finale.

It'll also be an opportunity for Becahi (9-0, 7-0) to claim their second straight LVC title after they defeated Easton 33-24 in front of a raucous Golden Hawk crowd last...

Truby named new LHS coach

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

John Truby celebrated his 30th birthday on Monday and he couldn't have gotten a better present than what the Bethlehem Area School District gave him at their monthly board meeting that night.

Truby was approved to become the next head football coach at Liberty, ending a month of speculation about one of the hottest vacancies the Lehigh Valley Conference has to offer.

"If this is what your 30s have to offer, I can't wait to turn 31," said Truby. "It's a humbling experience and...

'Canes top Eagles

Thursday, January 31, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Although the Hurricanes were ten points ahead, halfway through their swim meet against Nazareth, Liberty knew the Blue Eagles could not be taken lightly.

In addition, Liberty swim coach Reik Foust, and diving coach, Jeff Zettlemoyer, make it a practice to not cash in on diving points when the other team, in this case, Nazareth, has no divers. On top of that, the meet would be scored as a six-lane rather than an eight-lane meet.

"We have a ten-point lead now, but that could...

'Canes look to make finals

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Just the talk of having Liberty reach this weekend's District 11 3A wrestling finals is something that excites head coach Jody Karam.

But at the end of the day, talk is talk and the Hurricanes will have to walk the walk if they want to be the first team in Karam's 20 years to reach the final mat Saturday.

Liberty will take that plunge this weekend when district duals kick off at Freedom on Friday and Saturday.

The goals for Karam's bunch is to make a splash, but how big...

Pates take down Rovers

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Freedom's boys swim team scored another victory last week with a 64-37 win over Easton.

"We're one of the least deep teams, but to have the record we have and do what we do is really amazing," said Freedom's Peter Conzola.

The Patriot boys have only two losses to swimming powerhouses Parkland and Emmaus.

In Freedom's meet against Easton, Scott DelFranco, Eric Lawrence, Conzola, and Connor Harrigan began with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:47.30.

FHS falls to Easton

Freedom's girls swimming team was defeated by Easton, 56-46, last week, but not without a fight.

"There were a lot of little things in that meet, a lot of [close races]," said Patriot captain, Molly Magnan.

The Red Rovers opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay, and the Patriots placed second. Easton also won the 200 free relay with Freedom close behind, but in the third and final relay, Shannon Howell, Brooke Munion, Carly DelFranco, and Helen Hsu combined to...

Hawks fall to Emmaus

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in Sports

One thing was evident in the eyes of Bethlehem Catholic boys basketball head coach Michael Frew from the beginning of last week's game against Emmaus - the Hornets wanted it just that much more.

The Hornets (9-8 overall; 7-3 in LVC) jumped out to a 21-12 lead after the first quarter, and were never severely threatened from that point on en route to their 66-52 victory over the Hawks (8-9 overall; 2-8 in LVC) last Thursday night.

"To win games in this league you got to be...

Liberty defeats Council Rock N.

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

It was a good start to the day for Bethlehem at the Lehigh Valley Hoop Group Showcase at Parkland on Sunday, but the tournament ended with a loss to another Bethlehem school.

Liberty kicked things off Sunday afternoon with a 54-46 victory over Council Rock North, getting a small dose of revenge on their District One counterparts, after the Indians eliminated Liberty from the second round of the state playoffs two years ago.

For head coach Chad Landis, it wasn't much about...

Liberty tops EHS

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Liberty's senior night resulted in a 52-34 victory over Emmaus last Tuesday.

After a 21-16 Hurricane lead at the half, the Hornets threatened in the third quarter, pressing on defense and pulling to within one point.

"I think they played really good defense the whole game, but our guards handled it well," said senior, Maggie Zerbe, who had ten points on the night.

Liberty point guard, Kay West, opened the fourth quarter with two points, which started a scoring run for...
