Tuesday, September 24, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Freedom's 2-0 victory over Whitehall in boys soccer last Saturday night was a win in the nick of time for the struggling Patriots.

Recent losses to Northampton and Parkland in which Freedom played well could have taken a toll, but the Patriots responded with a win over the Zephyrs under the lights at BASD Stadium in the rain and without senior goalkeeper Josh Wasilik.

Sophomore, John Eltringham, stepped in for Wasilik, who is recovering from a concussion, with seven saves....

Tuesday, September 24, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Freedom's girls tennis team boosted its record to 10-3 with a 6-1 victory over Bethlehem Catholic last Thursday.

At number one singles, Flannery Johnston (F) defeated Taylor Treadwell (BC) 6-3, 6-2.

"She was hitting it pretty hard most of the time. I got down 30-love, 40-love, and I knew if I got mad, I'd lose, so I tried to stay calm. When I play calm, I get into a longer rally and eventually win," Johnston said.

Patience was the key to Johnston's victory on Thursday....

Wrestling changes coming at districts

Tuesday, September 24, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

District 11 announced that changes to the team wrestling tournament will be under way for the upcoming season. Instead of having 10-team formats in both 3A and 2A, 12-team tournaments will now be used moving forward.

The qualified teams and seeds will no longer be determined by a committee as in previous years, rather through the power point system that the district has used in most sports over the past two years.

The tournaments will also change from a single-elimination...

Freddie Simmons was set up as the lone deep man on Bethlehem Catholic's kickoff return formation. The rest of the Golden Hawks were up near midfield in preparation for a possible onside kick.

Simmons glanced up at the scoreboard and saw only 1:53 remaining in the game and his team trailing 29-26 as Emmaus just returned a Michael McDaniel fumble 66 yards for a touchdown.

Simmons knew something had to be done.

Surprisingly the Green Hornets kicked it deep and Simmons...

Hawks adapt to change

It hasn't been the easiest start to the season for Bethlehem Catholic's volleyball team, but things appear to be turning around.

The Golden Hawks took three straight games from Freedom Monday night to shore up their record back to .500 at 2-2 overall following two straight victories.

After starting the season 0-2 following losses to state ranked opponents Parkland and Southern Lehigh, things seem to be settling down a little for the Hawks.

That settling feeling is good...

Wednesday, September 11, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Jason Roeder doesn't look at it as pressure on his football team to get their first win of the season out of the way.

Thankfully, the Patriots got that first victory last week over Central Catholic in a 14-7 battle.

Jared O'Donnell intercepted a pass early in the fourth and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown to hold on for the win.

Quarterback Jonah Gundrum connected with Kylon Pretty on a 35-yard TD strike midway through the third quarter to give Freedom their other...
