Pates look to steal one

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Most Lehigh Valley Conference coaches knew it could be a wide-open race this year in volleyball and Freedom's John Yanek was part of that gospel.

With the LVC playing its way out with no clear front-runner, Yanek's Patriots now have their sights set on knocking off one of the top teams in the coming weeks.

The Pates (5-4, 3-3), winners of four out of their last five, enter a difficult stretch this week with contests against Parkland (5-1, 5-1) and Whitehall (3-3, 3-3) on...

LHS teams win two

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Liberty's boys track and field team scored two more wins last week, one against Whitehall 91.5-58.5, and one against Dieruff, 121-29.

Adam Uliana and Darius Jones won two events apiece for the Hurricanes. Uliana took first place in the 200 meter (22.4) and the 400 meter (51.7), while Jones placed first in the long jump (20-8) and the triple jump (42-0).

Liberty's Alex Fitch won the 3200 meter (10:18) in distance events.

Sean Frankenfield was first in the 300 intermediate...

Zephs rout BC, FHS falls again

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Results worked out in Bethlehem Catholic's favor a week ago on the diamond, but each week is a new spring chapter and the Hawks script for this week is more of a horror plot.

Becahi (4-7-1, 3-5) got much needed wins over Northampton and Nazareth last week to keep them hovering around the .500 mark, but Whitehall started this week off in a manner the Hawks didn't want.

The Zephyrs (12-1, 7-1) took down the Hawks 14-1 Monday to continue their torrent streak through the season....

Hawks rebound

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

It was the proverbial kick in the butt that Becahi needed following a stunning loss to Northampton a week ago that had the Lehigh Valley Conference buzzing.

The Hawks (5-2,5-2) lost in five games last week to Northampton 16-25, 25-17, 18-25, 25-23, 11-15. It was a shocker and the first time the K-Kids ever defeated Becahi.

But in any moment of defeat, an opportunity to rise follows. The Hawks did that over the weekend at the prestigious Koller Classic, getting a runner-up...

'Canes give Pates first loss

Tuesday, April 16, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Liberty knew that a loss to Freedom last Friday night at Coca-Cola Park would mean a hole in the division.

The Patriots entered the contest undefeated in the Lehigh Valley Conference and had a one-game lead over Liberty.

A loss would have meant an early two-game hole that nobody on the Hurricanes roster wanted to deal with.

Ed Albertson assured that wouldn't happen for the Hurricanes, as he picked up his third win of the season following a 6-0 win over their rivals in a...

Michael Bounassi leaves strong legacy

Tuesday, April 16, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Michael Bounassi might be a name that many of the youth in the Bethlehem Area School District may not be familiar with, but he is arguably one of the most important figures BASD has ever had.

The former teacher, coach and athletic director at Liberty passed away on March 30 at the age of 89. He'll be someone that's remembered for his 34 years of teaching in the school district, his pride in his Italian heritage, the competitor he was, the coach he became, but more importantly, the...

Liberty falls to Parkland

Tuesday, April 16, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

It was a chance for Liberty to see what they could do against another top tier Lehigh Valley Conference opponent, but this time the Hurricanes couldn't figure things out until it was too late.

With a win over Bethlehem Catholic under their belts this season, the 'Canes took on an undefeated Parkland squad last Thursday with their sights of truly cementing themselves as the top team in the league this season.

By night's end, that wasn't their fate, as Parkland (6-0, 5-0) swept...

Hawks top NHS HA

Tuesday, April 16, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Bethlehem Catholic singles players, Kevin Hamilton and Stephen Rossi, clinched their matches at number one and number two singles, respectively, and later teamed up at number one doubles to lead the Hawks to a 5-2 victory over Nazareth last week.

Hamilton defeated Andrew Wahlgren, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.

"I got off to a rocky start and lost the first set, but Mr. Harmanos just reiterated to play my game and get good ground strokes. I made the points longer and kept him moving back and...

Horton sets school record in 110 hurdles

Tuesday, April 16, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Bethlehem Catholic hurdler, Tyler Horton, broke another school record in the 110 high hurdles (14.4), and twin brothers, John and David Donchez, combined for 26 points in the Hawks 82-67 track and field victory over Freedom last week.

In individual events, John Donchez won the 800 meter (2:07), and David Donchez took first place in the triple jump (37-2 1/2) and the javelin (126-3).

Also for the Hawks, Becahi sprinter, Donovan West, was a double-event winner, placing first in...

Hawks still working hard

Tuesday, April 16, 2013 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in Sports

The Bethlehem Catholic boys lacrosse team has endured a tough start to the season.

Things didn't get any easier for the Hawks when they hosted current LVC leader Parkland last Tuesday at Bethlehem Catholic High School.

The Trojans scored eight first period goals, and regularly controlled possession of the ball for much of the contest. That lead was increased to 10-0 at halftime, which was then doubled by game's end, as the Hawks remained winless on the season with the 21-0...
