Becahi girls get win

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Bethlehem Catholic's girls basketball team was too hot to handle for Whitehall in the Hawks 48-31 victory over the Zephyrs at the Yasso-Rothrock Tournament on Saturday.

Although the Zephyrs took the early lead, a three-pointer by Becahi freshman, Nia Mims, sparked the Hawks offense toward the end of the first quarter.

Soon after, the Hawks pulled away when Becahi guard, Nicole Lacherza, hit a three of her own, breaking a 12-12 tie at the beginning of the second quarter.

Pates top Parkland

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

The energy inside Freedom High School's gymnasium last Saturday night had the feel of a District final, but it was only game one of the season for the Freedom Patriots and the Parkland Trojans.

Freedom was fueled by the surrounding environment, and used 21 first quarter points on their way to an opening win of the season, defeating Parkland 54-47 in the finale of the Yasso Christmas City Classic.

These two teams never seem to disappoint. They met in the League and District 11...

The Freedom Patriots participated in their first competition of the season at the Cheersport Philly Grand Competition on Saturday at Villanova University.

"Overall, we did a really good job. We lost 17 seniors, so we had a lot to compensate for. Our performance was a lot better than we thought," said Freedom co-captain, Sarah Callahan.

The Patriots' routine started with standing tumbling, a jump sequence, more standing tumbling, and stunts.

"Our jump sequence is pretty...

There must be something in the water at the Foust household, as Freedom High School has announced that Reik Foust has been appointed the new head swim coach for the Patriots, while his father, also Reik, is entering his ninth season as head swim coach for the Liberty Hurricanes.

The younger Foust, a 2004 graduate of Liberty High School and a 2010 graduate of Catholic University of America, has been a part of the swimming world for almost as long as he can remember.

"Since I was...

Pates have expectations

It didn't take long for Freedom swim coach Reik Foust to see what the Patriots are made of.

Hired in October and coming from Southern Lehigh, which is a 2A team, Foust already has high expectations after just a few weeks of practices.

"Practices have been incredible so far. The kids have shown up and swam beyond my expectations, and I'm planning to keep pushing them. I'm excited to see what they can do," Foust said.

Key returners for the girls team are Helen Hsu, Carly...

Freedom's hockey team gets a victory

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Mike Mould knows his team will tackle the challenge.

A season ago, Mould's Freedom ice hockey team made a momentous late-season run in the Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey League (LVSHL) Pure Division, a stretch that lead them into the championship against Parkland. Before their revival, Freedom appeared a longshot at best to make the postseason.

This year with a veteran core returning and a sense of momentum to begin the season, Mould expects his team to be an entry in the...

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by KATIE MCONDALD in Sports

Big numbers and key returners should add up to numerous victories for the Liberty Hurricanes swim team this season.

"We're real excited with what we have going. We were just talking about how good our team looks," said Liberty coach Reik Foust.

Foust is joined by assistant Jeff Matyus for another season, and, for his first year, assistant Evan Kocon, a Liberty grad and former Hurricane swimmer will join the coaching staff.

"I'm happy with the staff and happy with the...
