Freedom girls fall to Parkland

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in Sports

During the weekend's Yasso-Rothrock Christmas City Classic held at Freedom High School, the Patriots were dealt a tough Parkland team to tip off their regular season.

After hanging with the Trojans for the first eight minutes of play to start the game, it was a sloppy second quarter that loomed large for the Patriots as they fell 48-26 in their season opener.

The Patriots didn't have an answer for the Trojans' full court pressure, particularly in the second quarter when...

Pates win Q-town duals

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

You know the expectations for Freedom's wrestling team are different when a 4-1 opening weekend record is somewhat disappointing.

Head coach Brandon Hall doesn't want to seem overly critical or negative of his troops bringing home first place honors from the Quakertown Duals over the weekend, but when 5-0 was the goal for the Patriots, Hall meant it.

"I asked our seniors if I was being too critical about our results and they said no," Hall said. "It was the first weekend of the...

Hurricane boys blow out Dieruff

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

The last time Liberty played Dieruff, it was in summer league action and the Huskies ousted the Hurricanes from the Cedar Beach league.

Last Saturday night, however, was a different story.

Liberty overcame an early first quarter deficit and went on to route Dieruff 73-39 in the Yasso-Rothrock Christmas City Classic at Memorial Gymnasium.

Nine different Hurricanes scored on the night, led by DeShawn Oyeniyi's 17 points.

Joey Torres and Greg Noack also posted double...

Bethlehem diving teams hope to surprise

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Liberty and Freedom diving coach Jeff Zettlemoyer is returning most of his Hurricane divers from last year, while inaugurating new divers for the Patriots.

While Liberty will only have two male divers, Bryan Rivera and Alex Caccamo, two female divers will compete for the boys, as allowed by PIAA rules.

Victoria Carter, Rachael Steiner, Brenna McCormack, Regan Morrison, Samantha Kincaid, and Kim Fetter are Liberty's female varsity divers.

"Their strengths are their...

FHS cheerleaders compete in Philly

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

The Freedom Patriots participated in their first competition of the season at the Cheersport Philly Grand Competition on Saturday at Villanova University.

"Overall, we did a really good job. We lost 17 seniors, so we had a lot to compensate for. Our performance was a lot better than we thought," said Freedom co-captain, Sarah Callahan.

The Patriots' routine started with standing tumbling, a jump sequence, more standing tumbling, and stunts.

"Our jump sequence is pretty...

New FHS swimming coach has familiar name

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

There must be something in the water at the Foust household, as Freedom High School has announced that Reik Foust has been appointed the new head swim coach for the Patriots, while his father, also Reik, is entering his ninth season as head swim coach for the Liberty Hurricanes.

The younger Foust, a 2004 graduate of Liberty High School and a 2010 graduate of Catholic University of America, has been a part of the swimming world for almost as long as he can remember.

"Since I was...

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Bethlehem Hawks Brown were crowned 2012 Fastpitch Softball Association Lehigh Valley High School Fall League champions after a 9-3 victory over Whitehall Maroon on Oct. 25 at Pates Park, Allentown.

The Hawks broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and scored additional runs over the next three innings for the championship trophy.

Coach Rich Mazza said, "We were just happy. I don't really go in with the thought of trying to win, but I like to see some...

FHS wants hardware

Wednesday, December 5, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

Freedom's basketball team will have similar staples from last year's team, but if there's one thing that the program doesn't want to have from a year agoit's an empty trophy case.

After a 21-5 season a year ago that ended in a gut wrenching 47-45 loss to Parkland in the District 11 4A quarterfinals, the Patriots were left without an LVC title or a district title in one of their best seasons ever.

Now the Patriots hope to be back in contention on both ends with a team that...

Hurricanes sailing toward optimism

Wednesday, December 5, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

Last year, Liberty's wrestling team went the entire season without taking a second of injury time.

It's a statistic that doesn't show up often, but one that got the attention of Penn State head coach and arguably the greatest collegiate wrestler of all-time, Cael Sanderson.

Sanderson retweeted the National Wrestling Coaches Association's original message last March on also posted it on his Facebook site. From an outsider's perspective, gaining recognition from one of the most...

Hawks have optimism

Wednesday, December 5, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

Mike Frew would prefer to have his Bethlehem Catholic basketball team fly under the radar.

After a 5-17 season a year ago, coupled with being lumped in the Lehigh Valley Conference's East division alongside Liberty, Freedom and Easton, flying under the radar is right where the Golden Hawks find themselves in the midst of the 2012 season.

But as Frew enters his second season at Becahi, a cautious optimism is noticeable from a program that has enjoyed many good years, only to...
