Liberty looking to replace all of its singles players

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

The Liberty Hurricanes may have lost all its singles players to graduation, but Coach Leo Schnalzer has a number of players with some experience, as he attempts to find the right spot for each one for the 2013 boys' tennis season.

"We're still playing challenge matches, but we don't have to start them off from the ground floor," Schnalzer said.

Hurricane returners include junior, Brendan Cunningham, who played at number three doubles last year, and junior, Chris Kaposis, who...

Cruz, Lotito compete at NCAA tourney

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 by TIM ROBB Special to the Press in Sports

Lehigh's Randy Cruz went 1-2 at the NCAA Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa.

Cruz, a former Bethlehem Catholic wrestler, opened the tourney with an 11-0 win over Brian Owen of Boise State.

He scored a takedown in a very funky scramble in the first, and then turned Owen with a cradle. In the second period, Cruz tilted, and then again cradled Owen to lead 10-0 after two periods. After choosing top, and riding out the entire third period, he earned a riding time point for a very...

Freedom looks to learn

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

It would be fair to say that last year's baseball season was a tale of two halves for Freedom.

The Patriots started out hot and finished cold. After an 8-2 start to the season, the Pates slumped to finish 10-10 overall before losing to Whitehall in the first round of the district tournament.

With six starters gone from a year ago, head coach Nick D'Amico hopes the loss of nine seniors doesn't mean his new crop of players forgot about last year's lessons.

"We learned not...

FHS tops Bears

Freedom softball coach Nora Borger is implementing new rules, teaching discipline, and expecting hustle from the Patriots for the 2013 season.

"We've been discussing our goals. Everyone wants a winning season. Hit the ball hard, good pitching," said Borger.

Returners for the Patriots will be Emily Gundrum, Sam Cabrera, Becca Herman, Corrine Kline, Morgan Lukievics, Carly Deichman, Kelsey Brandle, Dana Morgan, and Megan Brown.

"Our pitching looks great. Emily is healthy....

Pate's Conzola is golden!

Wednesday, March 20, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

When the pressure was off, Freedom swimmer, Peter Conzola, turned the heat on and won the gold medal in the 100 backstroke at the Class AAA PIAA State Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday at Bucknell University.

"I realized I won when I touched the wall and looked at the opposite corner from where I swam, and I saw everyone from my team and District XI freaking out," Conzola said.

The Patriot junior was seeded seventh after the preliminary swim and was in lane one for...

Hilliard Dancing

Wednesday, March 20, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

When Liberty graduate Darrun Hilliard entered Villanova last season, he knew it would be a journey rather than a short spurt on the nearby Schuylkill Expressway.

He joined a program that was seemingly in transition and gained some earnest minutes along the way, making the adjustment as a freshman in one of the higher profile programs along the East Coast and in the country.

Through it all, Hilliard learned how to expand introductions to the game of college basketball into...

Hawks girls top Prep Charter

Wednesday, March 20, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Kalista Walters's back-to-back three pointers in the opening minutes of the Class AAA quarterfinal of the PIAA state playoffs, with a Janelle Robinson jump shot in between, set the stage for Becahi's 67-46 victory over Prep Charter last Saturday.

"Absolutely, Kalista's first basket set the tone for the game. It allowed all the young kids to get comfortable, and Smitty [Bridget Smith] took it upon herself to handle the ball," said Becahi coach Bill Lanscek.

Ironically, each team...

Many return for 'Canes

Wednesday, March 20, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Liberty track and field coach, Kevin Bush, is expecting the same strong Hurricane team that he has led over the past five years.

Key returners for the boys' team are seniors, Gerald Vital and Adam Uliana in sprints, senior, Matt Allred, in distance, and sophomore, Darius Jones, in jumping.

"As a whole, the jumpers are good. Our relays will be pretty good. We didn't graduate too many. Adam and Gerald were on the state relay team last year. We have a lot of new throwers, a lot of...

Magnan takes silver

Wednesday, March 20, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

The last thing Freedom swimmer, Sam Magnan, expected was a top seed, let alone a silver medal in the 500 free at the Class AAA PIAA State Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday at Bucknell University.

"I looked at the board, and my parents, and everyone cheering, and my coach. I felt relieved and happy, and I dropped seven seconds," Magnan said.

The Patriot sophomore finished the 20 lap race in 4:29.60. The gold medalist was Zach Buerger of North Allegheny, who finished...

Keeping Focus

Wednesday, March 20, 2013 by PATRICK MATSINKO in Sports

Bethlehem Catholic's Darian Cruz ended his high school career in style, defeating Bedford's Ryan Easter with a 16-4 major decision at 120 pounds to earn his second straight PIAA Class 2A state title.

One might have thought it would be difficult for Cruz to maintain his focus and intensity after winning the title at 106 pounds last year, but the Lehigh-bound senior never lost sight of his goals.

"All the hard work that I put in, year after year, just paid off," Cruz said. "It's...
