Liberty still rolling

Tuesday, April 9, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

It was a blessing in disguise in one book and a sign of what belief can do for another group.

Bethlehem Catholic entered the spring as the area's top team, but Liberty believed they can be that as well.

Even after the Hurricanes (4-0, 3-0) opened the season with a five-game victory over defending state champion Bethlehem Catholic (3-1, 3-1), both teams have used that result in different manners moving forward.

For Liberty, the win is a sign of what they can become, as...

Bethlehem Catholic handed Northampton its first tennis loss in the Lehigh Valley Conference, defeating the Konkrete Kids, 5-2, last Tuesday.

For the Hawks, it was the doubles teams that pulled through for the victory.

Becahi's Kevin Hamilton and Stephen Rossi avenged their losses at number one singles and number two singles, respectively, to win at number one doubles, 6-2, 6-3, against Northampton's Geoff Rybitski and Josh Schoenberger.

At number two doubles, Paolo Turco...

Three errors help Parkland walk off

Tuesday, April 9, 2013 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

Tyler Graeff hit a ground ball that hit off the glove of the third baseman, and Brad Vasilik came around to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the 8th inning for a 6-5 non-league, extra-inning win over Freedom last Thursday at Parkland High School in a battle of the unbeatens.

The error was the third Patriots miscue in the final three innings, which erased a valiant comeback by Freedom in the 7th inning.

"I think we look at it as we should have made some plays there,"...

Hawks rip Canes

Tuesday, April 2, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Eleven strikeouts and a grand slam for Bethlehem Catholic was more than enough to carry the Hawks to an 11-1 victory over Liberty last Thursday.

Becahi catcher, Jean Markovic, who hit two home runs including the grand slam, said, "We just settled in and played our game."

The Hawks scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning when Lauren Visconti scored on a single by Jackie DeSarro.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, Markovic hit a grand slam...

LVC too much for MVC teams

Tuesday, April 2, 2013 by BRAD HURLEY in Sports

Spring sports have began in the Bethlehem area, but there was still a little basketball to be played this past weekend at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem Township.

All stars from the Lehigh Valley Conference East faced off with all stars from the Mountain Valley Conference on "Super Saturday" at the Via All Star Basketball Classic.

The day also featured two games between the Lehigh Valley West and the Colonial League all stars squads in the early afternoon along with...

BC falls to Falcons

Tuesday, April 2, 2013 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

Mason Kresley ripped a fastball from Brayden Knipe over the left field fence for a three run home run. The long ball erased an early 2-0 lead for the Golden Hawks, and sparked a ten run comeback by Salisbury to take a 10-4 nonconference win at Salisbury High School last Monday afternoon.

Salisbury came into the season with high expectations, and had all of the ingredients for a state championship run. But Bethlehem Catholic was bidding for an upset, scoring two runs in the first two...

'Canes look to take next step

Tuesday, April 2, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

In what may be the most competitive Lehigh Valley Conference volleyball season ever, Liberty expects to contend for the league and district titles.

After an 11-9 season a year ago that saw the Hurricanes reach the district playoffs, Neid Ammary's group is ready to take another step forward this year in their search for hardware this spring.

"We learned that we had all of the pieces in place to make a championship run this season," Ammary said. "Our team improved steadily...

Becahi has to move to 3A

Tuesday, April 2, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Bethlehem Catholic's track and field team is in for a big change this season as the Hawks will now compete in Class AAA, up from Class AA.

Coach Gary Mohylsky said, "Obviously, it's wrong because we lost enrollment, but there are so many charter schools now. That's what did it, the charter schools, but we have to deal with it."

Although the Hawks have plenty of athletes returning, they also have a fair share of newcomers.

On the boys side, two-time district champ, Tyler...

Freedom tennis team gets a 4-3 victory over Central

Tuesday, April 2, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Relentless.

That's how Freedom's number two singles player, Bill Leeson, remembered his match against Central's Gabriel Velez in the Patriots 4-3 victory over the Vikings last Tuesday.

In one of two matches that went to three sets, Leeson won the first against Velez, 6-4, before dropping the second, 4-6.

"I was actually up 4-3 and managed to give away the next three games. Gabe, he was relentless. A lot of our games went to deuce, and he managed enough of those to get...

Hawks eye state trifecta

Tuesday, April 2, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

It's never happened before, but Bethlehem Catholic hopes the stars align for them this spring on the volleyball court.

After winning the PIAA 2A title last year, the Hawks aren't only looking for a repeat, but a trifecta when it comes to hardware on the court.

Winning the Lehigh Valley Conference, district and state championship are on the agenda for the 2013 Hawks and third year head coach Jeff Koch is confident in a group that returns three starters from last year's magical...
