Pates stun LHS more ways than one

Tuesday, February 12, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

When a team is hot and confidence is rolling, there really aren't any boundaries on what you can accomplish.

And when Freedom takes the court tonight at Easton Area Middle School for the opening night of the Lehigh Valley Conference basketball tournament, it'll be a chance for the Patriots to make amends for not winning the league crown a year ago.

Freedom (15-7, 10-4) enters the tournament as the third-seed and open with second-seeded Parkland (15-5, 11-2) at 6 p.m. tonight in...

Hawks earn trip to the District 11 playoffs

Tuesday, February 12, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

The top priority for Bethlehem Catholic's 2012-2013 season has been fulfilled, but they aren't done yet.

The Golden Hawks defeated Easton last Saturday 65-62 to clinch a berth in the District 11 3A tournament.

This year's 3A bracket may be one of the most competitive in recent history, with Central Catholic (20-2) leading the way, along with the likes of an upstart Wilson (21-1).

Pottsville (18-4) and Blue Mountain (18-4) are always capable of throwing a wrench in a team...

'Canes rally, beat Freedom

Tuesday, February 12, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Throughout the first 12 minutes of Liberty's game against Freedom on Saturday, it did not appear that it would be a good day for the Hurricanes.

Not only did the Patriots have home-court advantage, but Freedom was determined to avenge its three-point loss to the Hurricanes earlier this season.

Who knew that Maggie Zerbe's bucket with 3:25 to go in the second quarter would only be the start of an 11-point run by the Hurricanes, rallying from a 20-9 deficit, and holding Freedom...

Freedom girls get a victory over Moravian Academy

Tuesday, February 12, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Freedom's girls swim team scored a 129-56 victory over Moravian Academy last week.

"They have three different teams within Moravian Academy, [Wilson, Notre Dame, and Moravian Academy], so it was weird to see so many girls that I knew," said Freedom senior, Brooke Munion.

The Patriots opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay by Carly DelFranco, Kelly Kopko, Carly Cussen, and Molly Magnan in 1:59.40.

Rebecca Busby won the 200 free in 2:11.50,...

PHS boys top Liberty

Tuesday, February 12, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Liberty's boys swim team knows that faster competition means faster times for the Hurricanes, so despite its 134-52 loss to Parkland last week, Liberty made the most of its second defeat of the season.

"We knew they were going to be really fast, so we made the most of the opportunity we had to swim against really fast people," said Liberty captain, James Sheplock.

The Trojans won all first places and most seconds.

"When you see them, you don't want to let them beat you....

Hawks now eye state three-peat

Wednesday, February 6, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

It wasn't a surprise to anyone that Bethlehem Catholic left Freedom Saturday night with their third straight District 11 2A championship.

The Hawks crushed the competition in all three bouts, capping off their dominant weekend with a 53-9 victory over Saucon Valley in the finals.

As head coach Jeff Karam enjoyed another championship, it was evident that no matter how easy it looked for Becahi over the course of two days, the end result of claiming another piece of hardware was...

A physical rivalry

Wednesday, February 6, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Sometimes a rivalry game can be just as meaningful as a championship one, which was the case in Bethlehem Catholic's 48-37 victory over Liberty last Friday night.

Even a 14-point Hurricane deficit at the end of three quarters could not diminish the intensity of what proved to be a physical game, if nothing else.

"[I'm not surprised] at all. We're both rivals, and we're the only undefeated team in the LVC, so all the other teams step it up even more," said Becahi guard, Nicole...

Girls earn emotional tie with Emmaus

Wednesday, February 6, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Tears of joy flowed for Liberty's girls swim team as the Hurricanes tied Emmaus, 93-93, something Liberty had not achieved against the Hornets in 20 years.

Liberty captain, Emma Williams, said, "My mom was in the stands, and she was crying, and [Coach] Reik [Foust] was crying. All week, we kind of prepped ourselves, and our coaches really buckled down and got the best line-up. We knew it was going to be head-to-head."

Adding to the drama was the fact that the Hurricanes were...

'Canes fall to Trojans

Wednesday, February 6, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Jody Karam admitted that his wrestling team probably competed above their heads during the course of the regular season.

That finally caught up with Liberty last weekend when they lost to Parkland 53-13 in the District 11 3A team wrestling championship semifinals at Freedom.

Parkland won 11 of 14 bouts against the Hurricanes Saturday afternoon, five of which came via fall and two from technical falls, in a bout that Liberty looked overmatched.

Karam wasn't naive to the...

Pates fall to Hornets

Wednesday, February 6, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Sixty seconds could not tick off the clock fast enough for Freedom to hold on for a two-point victory over Emmaus, and there was only one word that could express the Patriots' 37-36 loss.

"Disappointed," said Freedom center/forward, Ashley Husser.

On a pass from Husser in the final minute, Freedom guard, Ashley Gordon, scored to put the Patriots ahead, 36-34, when the Hornets called a timeout.

Emmaus proceeded to lose the ball under pressure from Husser, and the Patriots...
