Freedom tennis team gets a 4-3 victory over Central

Tuesday, April 2, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Relentless.

That's how Freedom's number two singles player, Bill Leeson, remembered his match against Central's Gabriel Velez in the Patriots 4-3 victory over the Vikings last Tuesday.

In one of two matches that went to three sets, Leeson won the first against Velez, 6-4, before dropping the second, 4-6.

"I was actually up 4-3 and managed to give away the next three games. Gabe, he was relentless. A lot of our games went to deuce, and he managed enough of those to get...

Hawks eye state trifecta

Tuesday, April 2, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

It's never happened before, but Bethlehem Catholic hopes the stars align for them this spring on the volleyball court.

After winning the PIAA 2A title last year, the Hawks aren't only looking for a repeat, but a trifecta when it comes to hardware on the court.

Winning the Lehigh Valley Conference, district and state championship are on the agenda for the 2013 Hawks and third year head coach Jeff Koch is confident in a group that returns three starters from last year's magical...

Hawks fall in state final

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

If the pregame of the PIAA State Class AAA girls basketball final foreshadowed the outcome, Bethlehem Catholic coach Bill Lanscek was the first to know his Golden Hawks could be in trouble.

"The officials were talking to both teams about sportsmanship, and afterward, they asked both teams to look at each other, but number 31 from South Park never raised her eyes to look at our girls. It was like she was saying, I'm here for business, and that's how they played," said Lanscek.

Freedom softball coach Nora Borger is implementing new rules, teaching discipline, and expecting hustle from the Patriots for the 2013 season.

"Our pitching looks great. Emily is healthy....

Freedom High School has announced the appointment of Nora Borger as the new head girls softball coach.

Borger had been the Patriots' assistant coach since 2008, and was the assistant junior varsity coach at Emmaus High School.

A 2002 graduate of Robert Morris University, Borger was a member of the softball team there, and she was also a starter on the 1996 Northampton Senior High School PIAA State Championship softball team.

This past winter, Borger conducted winter work...

Season had its highs, lows

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Bethlehem Catholic's girls basketball team celebrated the highs and embraced the lows over the course of the 2012-2013 season, creating one of the most successful teams in the school's history.

Even before the season began, opposing coaches thought the Hawks would be a team with which they would have to contend - and they were right.

Either Becahi coach Bill Lanscek was not so sure, or he was holding his cards close to his vest. Most likely, it was the latter, evidenced by the...

'Canes have strong arms

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Liberty's baseball program has been under the guidance of head coach Andy Pitsilos for the past 11 years.

Consistency is one thing that comes with a long tenure. Tradition is another.

The 2013 Hurricanes hope to continue in both of those aspects as they enter this spring with a strong crop of six pitchers.

With snow on the ground over the past two weeks, having an abundance of arms can be a fortunate position if mother nature doesn't cooperate with scheduling this season...

Hawks start season with two wins

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Bethlehem Catholic's girls softball team may already be ahead of the game after a successful preseason scrimmage against Pen Argyl, Friday's 13-6 victory over Pleasant Valley, and Saturday's 13-2 win over Salisbury, showing that the Hawks are headed in the right direction for the 2013 season.

Becahi has the good fortune of returning six seniors: first baseman, Courtney Dupont, second baseman, Jackie DeSarro, third baseman, Kate Yanders, pitcher, Joelle Morey, left fielder, Lauren...

Patriots only returning two

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

After a hugely successful boys' tennis season in 2012, Freedom coach Jeff Young has a long way to go in 2013.

Only two varsity players are returning, Andrew Sinai and Bill Leeson, and most of the Patriots' team are underclassmen.

Sinai, a sophomore, will repeat as the Patriots' number one singles player.

"Andrew is just a great player. I saw him play a couple times this summer," said Young.

Leeson, a senior, will be the Patriots' number two singles player, after...

Hawks worked hard in offseason

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Bethlehem Catholic's boys' tennis team worked hard last summer and played through the winter, setting the table for a season to look forward to.

"We're pretty excited. They improved, and they're really into their tennis," said Becahi coach George Harmanos.

Although the Hawks' line-up may change, Harmanos has senior, Kevin Hamilton, at number one singles, and senior, Stephen Rossi, at number two singles.

"They're very close," Harmanos said.

Sophomore, Luke Mesko,...
