Pates take down Rovers

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Freedom's boys swim team scored another victory last week with a 64-37 win over Easton.

"We're one of the least deep teams, but to have the record we have and do what we do is really amazing," said Freedom's Peter Conzola.

The Patriot boys have only two losses to swimming powerhouses Parkland and Emmaus.

In Freedom's meet against Easton, Scott DelFranco, Eric Lawrence, Conzola, and Connor Harrigan began with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:47.30.

Freedom's girls swimming team was defeated by Easton, 56-46, last week, but not without a fight.

"There were a lot of little things in that meet, a lot of [close races]," said Patriot captain, Molly Magnan.

The Red Rovers opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay, and the Patriots placed second. Easton also won the 200 free relay with Freedom close behind, but in the third and final relay, Shannon Howell, Brooke Munion, Carly DelFranco, and Helen Hsu combined to...

Hawks fall to Emmaus

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in Sports

One thing was evident in the eyes of Bethlehem Catholic boys basketball head coach Michael Frew from the beginning of last week's game against Emmaus - the Hornets wanted it just that much more.

The Hornets (9-8 overall; 7-3 in LVC) jumped out to a 21-12 lead after the first quarter, and were never severely threatened from that point on en route to their 66-52 victory over the Hawks (8-9 overall; 2-8 in LVC) last Thursday night.

"To win games in this league you got to be...

Liberty defeats Council Rock N.

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

It was a good start to the day for Bethlehem at the Lehigh Valley Hoop Group Showcase at Parkland on Sunday, but the tournament ended with a loss to another Bethlehem school.

Liberty kicked things off Sunday afternoon with a 54-46 victory over Council Rock North, getting a small dose of revenge on their District One counterparts, after the Indians eliminated Liberty from the second round of the state playoffs two years ago.

For head coach Chad Landis, it wasn't much about...

Liberty tops EHS

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Liberty's senior night resulted in a 52-34 victory over Emmaus last Tuesday.

After a 21-16 Hurricane lead at the half, the Hornets threatened in the third quarter, pressing on defense and pulling to within one point.

"I think they played really good defense the whole game, but our guards handled it well," said senior, Maggie Zerbe, who had ten points on the night.

Liberty point guard, Kay West, opened the fourth quarter with two points, which started a scoring run for...

Liberty divers, Brenna McCornac, Victoria Carter, and Rachel Steiner, placed in the top ten at the Lehigh Valley Conference Diving Meet on Jan. 12 at Emmaus High School.

Liberty/Freedom diving coach Jeff Zettlemoyer said, "They really dove well. I'm proud of them. Kaycee too."

Freedom diver, Kaycee Stoudt, placed 11th with 272.90 points.

McCornac, who was in fourth place for most of the eleven-dive meet, finished in fifth place with 323.15 points.

Liberty basketball team looking to get defensive

Tuesday, January 22, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Things aren't fully in place for Liberty's basketball team, but another week on the calendar can hopefully shift the Hurricanes into the right direction.

Liberty (9-5, 6-2) ended last week on a high note by winning two straight after dropping another Lehigh Valley Conference contest in as many weeks, when Central Catholic (13-2) downed the 'Canes 68-56 last Tuesday.

After a loss to Parkland previously, coupled with a loss to Central, Liberty has lost to the top two teams in the...

Pates eying big week on the wrestling mats

Tuesday, January 22, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Freedom hasn't had the easiest ride in 2013, but the Patriots may have found a moment of reprieve following last weekend's jaunt to Juniata Duals.

The Patriots went 4-1 in the dual meet tournament and took home third place after a lone loss to eventual champion Biglerville.

Freedom lost to Biglerville 44-22 to cast the lone blemish over the weekend.

After a disappointing loss to Northampton last week, followed by a 49-18 defeat to Easton last Wednesday, the Pates (10-7)...

Fouls hurt FHS in loss

Tuesday, January 22, 2013 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

Four of Freedom's five starters were plagued with foul trouble at some point in the game that forced them to sit, including the backcourt of Nigel Long and Maceo Connor. Even with the sometimes lack of their offensive facilitators, the Patriots never backed down and traded shot for shot with Parkland. But, the Trojans just got the better of them winning 53-50 last Friday night at Parkland on their senior night.

Senior Nyreef Jackson scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed 8 rebounds...

Patriot girls post back-to-back wins

Tuesday, January 22, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

One of the goals for the Freedom Patriots this season is to improve on last year's record of four wins, and with back-to-back victories last week, the Patriots are on their way.

Freedom defeated Northampton, 41-35, last Tuesday, and Wilson, 41-28, last Thursday.

"We kind of came out slow [against Northampton], but we knew it was our game," said Freedom guard, Brenna Dosedlo.

The Patriots came back from an 18-13 deficit at halftime, scoring 14 points in the third quarter...
